Not sure about you, but if I see something shiny out of the corner of my eye in a skip, I'll check it out.

To start the thread, my dumpster dive of the day:



Few quid for a battery and I'll see if the bugger works. Always wanted to give one of these a blast back in the day, but the card and RAM combined were way too expensive. Now it should be peanuts (in relation).

It's amazing what you can find in skips especially depending on the area.

When I was doing social work, I had a client who lived in a hostel in Nottinghill Gate. He regularly used to go out looking for what people had dumped and had managed to almost entirely furnish his room with some seriously nice stuff.

Hmm, think those take original DDR, max 4*1GB. If you've not got it lying around it could be a bit pricey, for the same money as the dimms and a battery you could probably pick up a 32GB SSD or another tenner for 64GB that wouldn't be too far off in performance.

Not quite dumpster diving, but Freecycle is freakin amazing. Got a decent King Size bed and matress on there, and my housemate furninshed the entire living room (leather sofas, 32" Sony Trinitron CRT, Tables, Chairs, lamps). Ifyou have access to a Van or trailer it's amazing.

Should already have the RAM, otherwise yeah, not cheap. 4GB limit is correct.

I've already got SSD's, I'd like to compare it.

Either way though, if it works and it's as fast as it should be, there's a new drive for my server.

I've got a couple of kitchens worth of obsolete kitchen doors in my loft and a slightly damaged kitchen corner unit, all of which got lost on the way to the skip at work (with the manager's blessing).  I also have enough laminate flooring to redo the whole of my downstairs for £60.  All I need now is some motivation and some nice worktops.

Edit:  Forgot I also acquired an awesome Cannon printer and half decent HP Desktop PC from work too.

My DDotD is an "old" machine from work, Socket AM2+ board, GT120, 2GB RAM. Will probably end up in the rehersal bunker and become a software audio effects processor.

I got sidetracked by Bioshock and a new GFX card

I've got 1GB DDR from one junk box, hoping there's another there as that will do me for the server. I'm going to gamble on the unit working for a test without the battery, if it doesn't like it I'll hack a mobile battery into it for the test.

Clearly posted in the wrong topic.

In regards to the card. I have confirmed it's working. My guess is they outgrew the card. The battery is either at the bottom of the skip, or it was pulled to keep another unit going. This was either running Maya, or it was an asset card for Maya. It's possible they were using more than one in each PC, considering the work they were doing.
