Dont' think I've ever watched a film on my PC but I want to watch Clarkson's latest offering.
WMP is refusing to run the video giving me some bollocks about resolution issues. Of course I've pissed about with the resolutions knowing damn well it wouldn't help. It didn't.
Any suggestions?

Do you have the DVD codecs installed?
should be able to get them from your Graphics card maker
Also, is it HD, BD or SD?
HD/BD require paid for softwares like power dvd ect.. but SD can be played in WMP with the correct drivers and codecs for free

Tried Media Player Classic? or VLC?  The former is good for testing this problem since it doesn't require installation. The latter is good because it can play DVD's without messing up any codecs on your machine - it literally has everything in it's install directory, and doesn't check the windows stuff. Windows Media Player sometimes barfs, I've not used it recently and never heard of that error though. |

meh, funny you should ask, ive just been through this with my dad.
Companies actually need to buy a license to produce a program that can play/decode dvd's so to cut costs out of XP microsoft didnt bother bundling a DVD codec/player with it (though did for Vista) - so you need to buy a third party program to play DVD's with.
Y'see i assumed free DVD playing software would be 10-a-penny on the magic internets but given the cost of buying the license i assume its not financially viable as i couldnt find any, incidentally if anyone does know of one post a link as my dad still needs one (poor chap).
As Chaos points out though DVD playing software is often bundled with Gfix cards/motherboards/DVD drives so check all them useless CD's you got when you bought/built your pc.

I believe http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder_1.00.58.html comes free with nVidia cards on the disc.. could be wrong and could vary from makers (EI, XFX, MSI ect) Its been a long time since I had my mits on an nVidia disc |

Tried Media Player Classic? or VLC? Seconded. Both are very good to watch diverse kind of videos without going through too much trouble with codecs. May I recommend this site? |

I remeber when VLC was only on macs... oh how times change
It is an awsome piece of open source freeware!
Its by far the best free video playback software, beats WMP hands down

On the topic of video codecs, I recomend downloading QT Alternative and Real Alternative. They allow you to play QuickTime and Real file types on WMP and other media players like Media Player Classic without having to install QuickTime and Real themselves. |

Yep. VLC sorted. Clarkson wasn't at his best. And my new car still pisses 0 - 60 on anything he was showing off in.

did you donwload a codec (and if so which one) to go with VLC or did it play the DVD straight from the off cus when i tried it it didnt work properly. Think ill give it another go.
