So a few server suggestions Custom maps - we don't need quickplay anymore so adding some custom maps would be fun and there are some really good ones and also sometimes more experienced players are attracted to custom maps - Ping limits - there are a few people who get kicked so can we raise them slightly so they can enjoy it as well Events - should we put on some special events like hat give aways or custom map nights? To attract new members etc. - obviously some give aways will just attract awful people who will leave once it is over but it would be cool to do some community growing stuff

Good idea Banrab! I suggest we add trainsawlaser to the map roster. It's got trains, saws, lasers... What more could you want?! But seriously, I'd love to see some of the comp maps like metalworks and viaduct_pro added!
I think giveaways might work in the short term, but we'd need to get them into the community. I know glubbable and TF2Outpost used to do massive unusual giveaways, but his servers are empty outside of events because there is no community that brings people back.

Sadly, custom maps have been tried in the past with one result:
TF2 players don't have the patience to download and just leave

We've discussed this before and came up with a list.
We decided to add them to the nominate list rather than put them on rotation but never actually played them, mainly because of concerns similar to Cruelcow plus we knew that we wouldn't get any Quickplay traffic when they were on.
Now we're no longer on Quickplay. People only find us via the browser or their favourites list. I'd say the odds are most would have the more common custom maps. Most of the people who to play on the server tend to have 'been around the block' in TF2 terms.
I think it's worth a try. We can always add 'custom maps' to our descriptor (or whatever fits) so players are prepared

Prohibiting the use of the dreaded mini sentry would be a great way to increase server population since the vast majority of players wish for Valve to banish them, however they do not listen. If WDG provided this players will flock from around the globe to be the first one's inside the glorious server. This is all the server needs for it to become a top ten EU server then WDG could branch out and become a publicly traded company then proceed to dominate the Earth as we know it. There could be merchandise in every store, on every street, in every country. People everywhere will know the name Who Dares... Grins!!

There's only one problem with that suggestion 60pus3 (or is it Mr. Fish, I can't tell). Grinning is for babies!!!
But regardless of whether or not we add custom maps can we at least remove things like standin from the mapvote autocycle thingy? Leave maps like that in the nominate option (and add hydro to said option) so that they only come up in the mapvote if people really want them.

This was the result of the last poll we held: cp_snakewater 7 (28%) pl_swiftwater_ugc 3 (12%) cp_process_rc2 4 (16%) koth_pro_viaduct_rc3 2 (8%) cp_croissant_rc6 3 (12%) pl_barnblitz_pro_rc2 5 (20%) cp_castle4 1 (4%) Snakewater and process are official maps now of course. Barnblitz_pro made a good showing and I think we added that. The thread is here anyway http://www.wdgclan.co.uk/index.php?topic=6045.0

One way to possibly avoid it is to maybe announce a custom map session a week (or maybe a couple of days?) in advance? Announcements etc.
Then you can have a "map pack" .zip folder with all the maps we'd be playing. Bundle a .txt file instructing users where to put the maps then you're away.

Is there a fancy way to do that since Valve messed about with TF2 mods/content distribution?

As long as the user installs them to "tf/download/maps" they should be good to play the maps without having to download them from the server. If you wanted to get really really fancy about it, you could make a WDG map installer so it'd install the maps automagically?

I think that at the moment most people come for the community and will probably be ok with downloading new maps? I know its never phased me even when my internet was bad because i wanted to carry on playing with the same group of people --
aslong as we make it a fun place to play and stay then it should be fine

Going back to your original post.
I think some of the simple competitions for the best name, that we've had on the Themed Friday Fragfests have worked well (started by Banrab)
We can keep an eye on ping limits, we don't want to raise it and cause gameplay problems. We can just see who our regs are who are getting kicked and their pings, and go on from there. From what I remember, they're only slightly above.

Just gonna perform some necromancy and piggyback on this thread.
I've heard some good things about cp_snowplow but I haven't played it yet and as most probably know Valve considers it "too complicated" for beginners for them to put into official map rotation. Is the map something that can be temporarily put into server rotation so we can test it out and decide for ourselves?
