It just reached that point somehow.

IMO SR2 was ideal, just the right amount of crazy arcade style fun, SR3 made the characters so powerful and able to do whatever they wanted that you couldn't relate and it was all just ridiculous and I lost interest after a bit, although I did go back a bit later for another go and got a bit further, still lost interest after a bit though.

SR4 looks even more mad, although maybe with the alien enemy it'll be slightly mroe balanced (in SR3 I could just run about hitting people with the penetrator with no problems, if it got too hot I'd just pull out the pistol(s) and headshot people, was a bit too easy).

The super powers are from the last dlc in 3. And despite being super powers i thought they nailed it.

3s problem was actually having too many sr2 hangovers. The silly design if done fresh is actually a lot more entertaining in a sandbox than same old same old gta clone

I haven't played the first game, I loved the second one, the third game felt disappointing and lackluster, and the fourth game seems to be taking what the third game did even further. I'm probably skipping this game unless they make some huge changes, which seesm unlikely at this point.  Undecided

I don't really understand why people are nostalgic for 2. The characters were never relateable terror they are mass-murderers and crime bosses. There was never any point in sticking close to the GTA formula both GTA and sleeping dogs do that better, silliness was always the selling point. I am going to enjoy being the commander in chief. Actually can't think of any other games where you are the president on a side note. (sam and max I guess but you are trapped by hideous puzzle logic and max is just kinda pushing the story along by himself, you are more like the 3rd guy in sam and max). I did play the entire game in coop though, it probably wouldn't have held my interest in singleplayer.

I don't really understand why people say that saints row 2 was like GTA, having put 200 hours into Saints row 2 and considering it one of my all time favorite co-op games, I still don't see how it's like GTA besides being an open-world sandbox game in a similar setting.

 Saints Row 2 had some of the best customization I've ever seen in a game. Sure, silliness is a selling point in the Saints Row series, but Saints Row 2 had a great balance of silly and serious while Saints Row 3 jumped the shark and ignored any kind of structure, focusing 100% on being as random as possible. There are no good guys in Saints Row, but that doesn't mean you can't root for the bad guys you're playing as (Hey, they're baddies, but it's all fictional). I really enjoyed watching The Saints take on the gangs of Stilwater, and the gang leaders were all very fun characters, while on the other hand I can't remember a thing about the story or leaders in SR3, besides half of the story missions being tutorials. Speaking of Stilwater, Saints Row 2 had awesome level design, each area had it's own very unique feel and it was easy to find your way through the city, while in Saints row 3 it felt like the whole thing was just one big grey city.

I can understand why others like Saints Row 3 more than Saints Row 2, but I feel like SR3 was just a lackluster mess without any structure compared to SR2.

 Just my two cents.

Also, They killed Gat in the very beginning of the game, off-screen, and it was pretty much never mentioned again. Still can't forgive them for that, damnit.

I enjoyed Saints Row 3 and would like to give Saints Row 2 a go. I heard it was similar to Saints Row but less, well crazy.

I'll see about Saints Row 4. If we're too overpowered and god-like I'll be less keen.

2 was identical to a gta game, with some slight tongue in cheek silliness and lots of customisation that everyone used to make one outfit and gave up. I really don't remember anything about it that really set it apart from GTA. I enjoyed 2 but it offered nothing new in story, setting, or mechanics (except the few areas that customisation and silliness touched upon). You say its not like GTA but how is it different? The side mission stuff is more interesting than GTA but spraying poo on some houses in a vehicle rampage or crippling yourself in accidents is just silly variations on what you'd find in gta.

3 managed to surprise me a few times and give me something to laugh at, and most of the interesting gameplay from it was the things that pushed further away from being shackled to the "real" world of gta. Its most definitely jumping the shark, but the shark is gta and its real world sensibilities, settings and concerns, and the fact that gta would never put a laser on a shark, or let you be the president with super powers inside the matrix battling aliens in a robot mech. GTA, or sleeping dogs (one of its true crime predecessors at the time of SR2), or LA Noire, or mafia 2 are all better than SR2 in telling stories about crime, building strong characters, doing everything a GTA game does. SR only ever had silliness, which was somewhat endearing but it didn't have enough to really distinguish itself from being yet another GTA clone. 3 I felt suffered from being the transition from GTA to something more free form with less rules and more freedom to do silly things. Some of the stuff was still left over from 2 that just made no sense to have in the game. Like you could buy an aircraft hanger at the airport but by that time you already had a VTOL for free so you could never possibly need any aircraft from the airport.

I am too tired to wrap up properly and make any kind of useful point. (Bear in mind I finished 2 in singleplayer, and coop was why I really enjoyed 3). 3 in some ways is very tacky and almost predictable but its forged an identity and gameplay focus that is beginning to provide something very different from GTA, and that can only be a good thing because I need more GTA games like I need more puzzle platformers. I don't mourn for SR2. If you haven't played stuff like sleeping dogs or LA Noire I would go to those for story/character/atmosphere/realism/setting/novel mechanics within the constraint of realism.

Berath the super powers in 3 were fine, and the introduction of aliens is basically an excuse to give you enemies on an equal footing with you. Although innocent pedestrian bystanders are screwed.

I guess we'll have to agree, since I basically  disagree with just about every point you make, and consider SR2 to be very different from GTA games, if you only played it single player you haven't experienced the game properly. Oh well, can't be bothered arguing.
