They do in some cases. I have the latest Lara Croft game demo sitting on my HDD for quite some time and it has been updated along with the full game (which gets preloaded when you download the demo, so it might be just for those games)

chug elemental has been fine for awhile, it came out in September and it only took them like a month to make it reasonable. I'm just still not buying it because its $50 and they havn't even bothered with UK distribution. We all know if it was amazon uk it'd be £20 by now.

I'm just getting pissed off with buying games day 1 and not being able to play them properly until the dev sorts their shit out and finishes patching the damn thing. I understand that some bugs will always slip through, but (to use BlOps as an example) not optomising for dual core CPUs and Vista/Win7 is just fucking sloppy; same with Borderlands and not being able to party up without using 3rd party apps or fucking around with firewall port-forwarding.
Yes, these things get patched, but I would genuinly rather wait another month and be able to play the game straight out of the box then have it stuck on my hard drive, taunting me because I don't happen to have the exact same PC specs as the dev who didn't do his testing properly.

I think I'm siding with Brahms and Cruel on the "don't do day 1" thing because it really isn't worth it. There is literally, nothing to gain (except pre-order bonus', but srsly, fuck those guys); the longer you wait, the more the game will be patched and cheaper it'll be by the time you come to purchase it.
Which is a shame because I like following the development of games and like reading about them but if you wait then you miss all that hype-train stuff because you're out of sync by 6 months or whatever.

I have no problem with patching problems that get found post-release, but I do feel that the quality of games is getting worse BECAUSE patching is so easy.

people still played new vegas despite the groin punchingly bad bugs. one thing i wish, though, is because of direct to drive style services like steam they would patch the demos too

Funny, I didn't have any "groin punchingly bad bugs" in the game apart from the normal kind of AI problems you get in an open world game, mainly pathfinding related.

I don't usually get games on day 1 mainly because of the price and usually lack of demo.
