Ok so i just beasted through the entire first season of Clannad (25 episodes in half a day come at me anime (rofl rhyme)).

As much as I did like it, when I think about it really is nothing special. Very predictable and even the hints of dark and interesting parts weren't very significant. As with all japanese Anime there are some ridiculous things etc etc. But ffs I couldn't help being like a fucking little girl and finding all the characters amazing and boo-hooing like an idiot.

Righty-o, what's the deal with the 'harem' stuff? Clannad was the first thing I've ever seen that can be apparently described as so and now I find out it was an adult Visual Novel? God I really know nothing about the scene! Hope my ignorance isn't obnoxious but I only now realise that there is a hell of a lot more behind this stuff than just what it is, in comparison to Western cinema. Reading about the genres like shonen I'm thinking they have a completely different approach which I'm oblivious too. Feels a lot like I'm missing out on a lot of the meaning by not understanding the medium.

Unfortunately  the Japanese are a pretty perverted nation. Also the market for Anime and crucially it's associated memorabilia are those known as the Otaku, basically socially crippled loners who have never mentally moved out of adolescence. Plus all of their proper porn is pixalated out.
This means that most animes end up full of stupid "panty shots" and male fantasy harems so that the nerds will go out and buy shit loads of figurines and 'Body Pillows'. It's where all the profit margin is and why Anime companies aren't THAT concerned about piracy. The Otaku will still go out and buy the shrink-wrapped limited edition shit.

Translation wise worst stuff i ever watched were some one piece HKSubs. these are subs that are translated to English by way of Chinese, apparently by a cheap ripoff of Babelfish, and they are hilariously bad. Good fun trying to work out what they must have actually meant though.

I avoid harem things myself (they come in all sorts of flavours but the most common is a single male with many females and lots of fanservice at minimum); pretty much I find them so depressingly aimed at wank-fodder, it's not even worth trying if it even supposedly might have the possibility of a "good plot".

So sorry Beau I can't help you avoid them as such, only suggest things that aren't them! but you're right, if you don't like them just avoid; they're pretty samey from what I know of them anyway.

Heh the thing is it was actually quite enjoyable. It's entertaining, funny and can be emotional but whenever I really think about it from a critical point of view, it just seems pretty bad.

Was kinda funny going from FMA to this, in FMA the characters are uncovering dark secrets and in Clannad the characters try to re-establish the theatre club.

Indeed they might be funny, emotional or whatever, but like you I kind of look at it from a critical view sometimes and think "Why not watch something better which also doesn't consist of quite some much T&A?".

i have a book on anime. I should really read it. but that would involve reading.

I'd hardly call FMA dark secrets, its pretty teen. I never had a sense of dread in the series it was pretty obvious what equivalent exchange was and that the main characters would win, and everything would be fine and happy (after the movie!). I was playing dragon age the other day and even though I knew what was coming in the deep roads, actual dread and a small amount of horror there. Also serious dwarf love, I hate dwarf fortress for reducing dwarves to ascii character sets, we really need to remake dungeon keeper but with dwarves.

Yea disco but that's the same in both of them. My point was it was just funny to go from massive battles and stuff to the high school setting where someone gets in trouble for putting up posters T_T.

Also Dwarves fucking suck . Who wants to be short? I learnt that the hard way in Neverwinter Nights. Short (i mean SHORT) races are unlovable.

the shortness is part of their character, but its the mines, the massive carved caverns, the underground roads, the runes, the nordic inspired art. THE BEARDS. I dunno I always used to like elves but i think i've been successfully converted to dwarves now. Also orlando bloom as legolas ruined elves also.

its true but i blame peter jackson. the book made more of exploring along the way. the films were just walking and over the top battles. I want them remade into super long 6 films or maybe a series.

The films were a short walk compared to the amount of walking in those goddamn books. So much time is wasted describing locations in complete detail even though they only stay in them for about 10 minutes.
