DC doesn't mean the director editied the film, its just his choice of length and pacing as opposed to the studio's (as in the bladerunner DC)

also the extended LOTR films go on for far too long, the originals lost my interest but the extended films bored me.

Also it should be added that in many cases director's don't have any say (or right) on a final cut.
The studio will usually have the director present his cut, but can order changes (usually after those infamous test screenings ;-)). If the director is involved in those changes is usually up to him.
Only few directors are granted a right to a final cut (most likely prolific ones). However, on smaller films it's unlikely that the studio will interfere unless they think the movie's in trouble.

Of course, by now D.C.s have become a marketing tool to milk the customer a second time for a DVD. But of course that doesn't mean the director might not be able to improve a movie, especially if he was forced to apply changes due to studio interference during the original edit which he can now correct (e.g. Aliens, Abyss, Blade Runner).
