Murderers should be executed. Rapist should be castrated. Corrupt politicians should be publicly flogged. Tax dodgers should be expropriated.

I hate to say it but I agree with Teatime. The big issue is that the justice system is too flawed and there is too great a risk of a miscarriage of justice. I'd hate to convict and kill an innocent person.

Aside from this probably being some sort of twisted poll experiment on T's side... I agree mostly to the punishment for Politicians right now but that's probably a personal thing. (Dunno how closely you've been following what's going on with internet censorship over here...) I also agree that punishments in most law systems as they are today are of inappropriate personal impact on the people. (A file-sharer (worst case) is facing the same sentence as somebody who killed a person (best case)... WTF?) But: (see Papa's argument), it's very hard to objectively determine whether a sentence is justified, because we're all subjective beings after all (as such, one might say the system is inherently flawed... But that's another discussion.)

[serious]I'm for the death sentence but not actually in the case of murder. In those cases it seems a) hypocritical and b) unsatisfactory to the families to let them off that easily. I'd rather see a life sentence in harsh conditions with absolutely no chance of parole for either 30 years or until the murderer is over 65, whichever is longer. A case I would consider the death sentence for is something like aggravated paedophilia or serial rape.[/late night soapbox rant]
I always thought any crime involving stealing large amounts of money should be punished by force feeding the victims large amounts of banknotes until they pass out. Nice and ironic.

I'm not in favour of the death penalty in any situation. I don't think that we have the right to take somebodies life away from them.

it seems rather uncivilised to say "you murdered one of us, now we are going to murder you back" sure there are plenty of crimes the criminal deserves to die for, doesn't mean they should. just make prisons crappy again. also on the file sharing thing, look at this

Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Had to be put in here

If a dog bites someone, we put it down for the safety of others.... Whats the difference But at the very least prisons need to be rethought as at present they are no more a deterent than being sentenced to butlins....
