'Nother review.
My experience with the game (you loose btw) is kind of mixed; I have never seen a more unique looking environment including the weapons you use, the random monsters in the background and the people you fight. Some of the set pieces are amazing, I don't want to give too much away, but the area you meet the dude from the webcomic (its earlier in this thread) in is fucking amazing: I'm taking more screenshots then a tourist at Windsor Castle takes pictures, its ridiculous! Rather then just being a magnificent looking game though, there is a nice "on the road again" story and development to back these visuals up which makes for a nice overall feel to the game.
As an asside the voice acting has recieved some stick too, but for me it added much to the story of these wierd people in this wierd world that they spoke a bit funny sometimes (fyi, I also liked the voice over on Portal:Prelude, so my judgement is probably questionable in this department!).
The downpoints for me (and it is only a minor downpoint), is the combat. Its probably me and one of my many retardations, but it reminds me a little of Mirrors Edge in that it gives you a very specific way of fighting that is very easily countered by a specific thing and then as the game goes on, makes the counter come up more and more. In this case, you are a bad ass hand to hand fighter, but really weak against ranged attacks. So, logically, as the game goes on and the difficulty curve starts to go up, you encounter more groups of people that have multiple gunslingers who proceed to shoot you in the back whilst you're trying to smash someones face in with your knee. This can turn some battles into a disarm fest leaving you with little option then to run around knocking guns out of peoples hands before they have a change to use them on you which pretty much fucks the hand to hand thing they had going on as by the time you've disarmed the last one, the first one has picked up his gun again. When you do get a chance to fight man-to-man (or elephant, or bird thing) without some douchebag shooting you every 3 seconds, you will see some of the coolest fighting moves and one of the best melee based combat schemes I have played for a long old time. Whilst the ducking and weaving takes a bit of getting used to and the fact that the lock on button is the same as the pick up health/weapons button, overall the system works really, really well, with 1-button combo's, power attacks, deflections and cunt-punts, you're never short of ways to ruin peoples shit.
I haven't finished it yet and haven't played any of the tower/leaderboard stuff, but thats kind of "meh" to me, all I was really interested in was the visuals and the combat which is well worth the £11 odd I paid for it.
I'd strongly recommend this to anyone that asked as you will never see a stranger, more imaginative location for a game ever! Also, you get to shoot squirrells with explosives strapped to them
