The checkbox can be found here: Options->Video->Advanced

I believe that TF2 is more "multi-core" now than before - and that this is enabled by default (for physics etc). This comes from the porting of the L4D engine tweaks back into TF2. I say this as TF2 has got faster for me in recent updates - without me changing anything. Smiley

I think the multi-core graphic option is something different (yet to be made clear) - the support of dual GFX processors may be the right answer.

There are Multicore GPUs around, I believe the GTX2xx series is already, but I'm not too firm on that

Nevertheless, IIRC rendering works such that the CPU processes the geometry (for movement and such), sends all the polygon mess to the GPU and then kindly asks to texture it (including visibility calculations and the likes).
Since todays G-Cards are basically way too fast for just texturing a scene, they mostly idle waiting for the CPU to come up with some more vertices, and can thus be used for things like physics (or PhysX, if you will).
Methinks this Multicore support actually enables CPU Multicore Geometry processing. (Which is, AFAIK, more difficult to parallelize then the texturing part, and thus only comes into the game at this late stage.)
