Possible problem with this scale, i think (in fact am pretty sure) hlstats records time spent on the server when there are less than 6 people on it, but doesn't record the stats, so if you've ever just been pratting around with 3 or 4 people for long it may skew that. I'm pretty sure that's how it works anyway...

Not really. I'm an Access-geek. I created a table, wrote a procedure to transform data and perform the calculations and then created a queary to filter the results. I can update this list very quickly.

Yes, if HLStat counts time even if it doesn't count points then the resulting ppm-value is skewed. Though I guess this would affact people with less playing time more than people like us who are virtually spending our whole evenings there

how did you get the numbers into the table in the first place though? Copy and paste from the hlstats webpage diddn't look too good when I last had a go at doing this.

Was thinking i'd probably have to write a perl script or something to grab the player stats page sorted by time played and parse it into a csv file.

C&P into Excel (works fine, but had to pre-format one row), then C&P into my Access table.

I had similar thoughts like you, when I was in the top10, but the problem with the time system is, you punish people who fool around in between. Heck, playing when the server is nearly empty would be punished, since you can hardly keep your kills rolling if there are less targets in the field.

I want to echo this comment - stats are just that, statistics. As the saying goes, "Lies, damn lies, and statistics"

Even taking into account it not being an accurate metric of times of low activity (thus low point scoring opportunities - you have a cap to points you can get in 6v6 vs 12v12 ), the simply fact that HLStats has some weird variables assigned to what points are what, and I suspect some things are not counted much. I mean, do melee kills really count as more "skillful" for instance... Integer skill is the worst kind, hehe, followed slightly by floating point based skill

(Having done some AI, I can tell you that the single-variable-rank doesn't work on any kind of metric for deciding something, hehe).

Still, 15th, wow, even with my dicking around with low amounts of players (And this can happen more then people think on server 1, if you don't play in the peak times). Missed a week of playing too, which pains me no end, not because of stats but because I bloody well enjoy playing the game. I'm impressed with people's responses to it too

I like being high on a list for a change . I'm usually only around at weekends, so I can never get near the HLStatsX top 10.

To be honest though, there are players below me who are a helluva lot better. I get lots of points due to my spy-ish tendencies. All the rest of BFM are below me on that list, but I'm really not the best in our clan, there's at least two people who should be higher on a list of skill levels from our lot, probably more.

It's because with different classes, it's more noticable who's playing that class well and who isn't. With spy, I can get lots of HLStatsX points pretty easy by just doing the job of the Spy moderately well, whereas Dibble for example who is a really good soldier, has to play out of his skin to get noticed in the same way by the stats.

Dunno, we're all probably thinking about this a bit too much, stats (or should I call it the Gasman challenge?) are just a laugh and a bit of an incentive to play well rather than a de facto way of measuring who's 'the best'.

Hopefully this didn't come across as me suggesting stats were important in general and HLStats in specific were a overly useful tool for measuring ones skill or contribution to the team. Quite the contrary: When a mediocre player like me can enter the Top10 before people much more skilled it just shows that those stats are flawed.
But I'd hope that the list I generated show that - at least based on that flawed HLStats - a lot of people are doing quite good without having the accumulated points to push them into the Top10.
