Alright, let's check how much RAM I have...

Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.79GHz, 504MB RAM

504MB RAM. Let's do another check on TF2...
Yeah, that's the minimum. 1GB RAM is recommended. I see.

As for finding out what motherboard I have, that link Zarf sent is useful but unusable; my Internet Explorer won't open - hence why I use Firefox now. Don't know why, must get on that.

Any other ways to know what motherboard I have?

to find out what motherboard you have you can do a few things...
1. If you have the discs that came with the computer, one of them will most likely be for your motherboard and the name will be printed clearly on it.
2. It might say it in the BIOS, if this is true, then you need to enter it. To do so, restart your computer and just as it starts up press DEL or F4 (whichever it prompts you to press) and you will be presented with a blue and white screen, Dont change any settings, just look for a manufacturer and model number Smiley
(it is very important that you do not change any settings and once you found your model, press ESC and Dont save any changes)
3. Take off the side of your case and have a look at the motherboard itself! There is usually some indication of to what board it is somewhere on it, just have a look.

Now you need to see if you have PCIe so click the link to see what it is and then open up your case and have a look if you can see if you have it (the longest one is for graphics cards, the smaller ones are for sound cards ect)

Would be nice to know what speed of ram you have too, so download this run it and click on the memory tab, should tell you everything you need to know Smiley

and 1GB of ram wont really cut it with tf2 these days.. some of the larger maps are very demanding on pcs (even at low settings) and RAM is so cheap that its worth 2GB.. can get it for about £20 DDR2

your CPU will be good enough for TF2, youll just need some ram and a graphics card Smiley
install your CPU and graphics card, give it a fresh install of XP or Vista (whichever you have) and your good to go.. (but remember to backup your data 1st)
you should notice a MASSIVE difference in speed of everything, from browsing the interweb to games.... youll be able to play pretty much any game and youll be a happy bunny!

The download recommended by Chaos (CPU-Z) has a 'mainboard' tab that should give full details of the motherboard manufacturer, chipsets and graphic interface which might save opening up the case.

Alright, I had a browse and since I have little (read as 'no') experience in building or upgrading computers, I have opted for the lazier but much more reliable option of simply buying a computer capable of it. I have seriously upped my budget and I am prepared to go to roughly £400.

These are the options I considered.

Option 1:
# Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Processor
# 2GB DDR2 667 Ram
# 500GB SATA HDD
# 256MB nVidia 8400GS Graphics Card
This seems like a very good computer to me. At least capable of running TF2. This is going for £343 and is delivered free in the UK by Amazon.

Option 2:
HP A6657
# Processor: AMD Athlon x2
# Memory (RAM): 2 GB
# Storage (hard drive): 320 GB
Bit vague, but I imagine anything missing will just be the graphics card. I'll buy that one Milli suggested in that case. This is going for £372 and is delivered free in the UK by Comet.

Option 3:
Just get the parts I need. :/
This is count as upgrading my current PC, which is showing its age and would be a bit of a hassle and inconvenience. Certainly the cheapest option, but still...

Now before you fly off the handle and yell '3' at me (if you want to further the stereotype that PC gamers hate mainstream retailers of computers), consider the other two and at least tell me if they are capable of running TF2 or anything else.

I would rather get a new PC than upgrade this one. Much more convenient for me.

Option 1 is WIN!
you could save a bit more money by downgrading that cpu... its a goodun but you dont really need it.. better off getting something like an E2200 and overclocking the hell out of it...
Im happy to help you with that seeing as im the resident overclocker Cheesy
I have lots of experience with that processor too Cheesy

also, You dont have a motherboard listed.. or a powersupply for each? thats gonna add at least another 150 quid to your total
DVD drive would help for installing windows... unless you have an external one? Ive seen it done plenty of times with pure awsome results! its nice to not have a dvd drive on the front of your pc.. looks cleaner

llol... have you learnt nothing young grasshoppar??
buy the parts and do it yourself!
the many advantages of doing it yourself include...
Greater knowledge of your system, so If things go wrong, its easier to fix them later on...
Greater amount of satisfaction and enjoyment when using your system knowing you built it yourself...
Save huge amounts of money (that 11grand super machine can be built for around 6)
You get all the parts you need for the job (none of that buying a super pc, then swapping bits out cuz theyr not what you expected)

A newbie can build a PC in a couple of hours.. thats all it takes
if you could tell me your budget and what your uses for the pc are, Im sure I could whack together a parts list and point you to some tutorials online Smiley

There is great satisfaction to be had in building your own rig. I agree with Chaos's comments, if you put it together yourself you do disarm the scary jigerypockery of it. Along with the advantage of you get presisly what you pay for. If you live anywhere near Gloucester I'd be willing to pop over and help you put it together. Just have lots of tea on standby Smiley

The off the shelf options can be good if you want an "out of the box" solution.

I took a look at the HP WEB site and I think this is the PC...
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06b/12454-12454-3329740-64546-64546-3793920-3821839.html?jumpid=oc_R1002_UKENC-001_HP%20Pavilion%20a6657uk%20Desktop%20PC&lang=en&cc=uk

All in all a good PC. I'm personaly no fan of on-board graphics on a desktop (not realy a choise on a laptop). A look down the specs does indicate that you could add your own PCI-E graphics card of choise at a later date, and then simply disable the onboard graphics card. As it stands I would wager it would give you a playable game of TF2. If I understand it correctly the on board graphics card is a GeForce 6 series card. Now I was running a GeForce 6600 card on my old PC and TF2 ran like a bag of bolts. There were manny whitnesses to my proclaimations of being happy to get FPS into double figures. So realy quite naff, even with all the graphics setting set to "Low". However the HP rig is running in 64 bit, where as I was on 32 bit. Also the HP has a duel core processor, where I was running a single AMD 3100 (1.8Ghz) processor. Along with the fact that the HP is using DDR2 Ram, where as I was running just DDR at 400Mhz, means that it should be quick enough. All in all you should get an OK to good TF2 game out of it. And than later you can upgread to a better graphics card, install extra RAM & install a better sound card when you want. There is also the added bonus of it comes with Vista Home Premium 64 bit. So in theory, you pay your cash, it arrives, you plug it in, it boot up and you fill in the "first run" stuff, and then install your games.

Unfortunatly I can't find the PC on Amazon that you have your eye on. I would assume that it will be a similar case to the HP, in that it will do the job but you will be looking at getting upgreads to it at a later date.

But in all honesty, if you can hold a screwdriver the right way round and read instructions, then there is no reason why you can't build your own rig Smiley

Also worth noting is:

If you buy a PC from a store / internet - they usually won't honour the warranty if you open up the case, without paying an extortionate amount of money for them to fit the parts - which means if you upgrade the graphics inside it within the year - you won't get anything back if something goes wrong.

It's important to check the warranty information very carefully when ordering an off-the-shelf pc.
