I am now considering to upgrade my ordinary computer so that I don't have to just rely on my friend's.
:D
But I'm not sure which is most important.
D:

A quick check on www.canyourunit.com shows that I meet the minimum requirements, but barely. Checking the recommended requirements shows that I need more RAM and a better video card, along with a better video card driver version.

I'll be honest; I'm good at playing on computers, not upgrading them. Therefore, could anyone give me a quick rundown of what this means and what options do I have?

(Example would be what kind of video card I need.)

Any help will be appreciated.

If your computer can't run TF2 at all, then you'll probably need to start from scratch.

Since you don't know much about components here's what you should be looking at getting.

Processor: Core 2 E8000 series, you could go for a quad core if you want but it's better to get a dual core with a higher clock speed for gaming.

GPU: Any ATI 4800 series or nVidia GTX 280/260 will be a hell of a lot better than what you currently have if you can't play TF2.

RAM: 4GB of DDR2 800MHz or higher speed. Get something by Geil or Corsair, don't buy generic or value RAM sold by the website or company.

Motherboard: Make sure you get a motherboard that can support SLI or Crossfire if you want either. SLI is nVidia multi-GPU and Crossfire is ATI. Also check that it will support your processor. A P45 chipset motherboard will do fine but it supports Crossfire, not SLI.

Eeeek! Whats ur current spec and we'll have to prioritise. But tbh, u won't be able to do alot with your budget unless ur system is pretty pokey already (and judging by ur shoutbox comments, its not Undecided ).

If you dont know, go to the device manager (right click my computer, go to propperties and find device manager)
Open all of options and take screenshots Smiley
you never know, you could be sitting on something that can handle tf2 with updated drivers and a slight overclock

if you just wanna play tf2 you can buy a graphics card and your done... doesnt have to cost much... bout 60quid?
if you wanna play left4dead youll need a new processor though a dual at least

This graphics card should do the job
and any processor over 2Ghz dual core ... but yours is intel so you need another intel one (if your mobo can take it)

how much RAM have you got, btw? It'll tell you on the page that comes up when you Right-Click 'My Computer' and click 'Properties'.

If you go here : http://www.crucial.com/uk/ there's an automatic scanning tool that will tell you what ram is compatible with your motherboard. 2GB minimum is reccomended, though with windows xp you can probably get by on 1GB.

The Radeon 4650 chaos posted is a solid budget card which should cope with TF2, but the 3850 Milli suggested is a fair bit beefier for a tenner extra, despite being an older card.

what zarf just said is spot on... there are cheaper cards that will do the job too, but may not do it for long... the 3850 is an awsome card

you can pick up 2 gig of ram for about 20 quid
wont be amazing but will do the job for sure!
all depends on what motherboard you have... the motherboard may even say you cant have that graphics card... if its old you may not have a pcie slot, meaning youll have to upgrade the mobo, meaning your better off going for a new build... I would be happy to do it for you and ship it to your house Smiley
