Hi chaps,

Not sure if any of you had noticed but over the last week or so i've been experiencing some most annoying issues involving my connection to TF2 servers.
Simply put, around 30 seconds after joining a server, I lose connection (i.e. get the little red thing in the corner with the countdown).

I've managed to get in game today, but having tried 6 different servers this evening, i'm starting to give up. I also get a small issue when actually connecting to the servers - it seems to stop just as it reaches the "Sending client info" part at the end.

I've just been on to CS:S to see if this happens as well, and unfortunately, it does.

I share an internet connection with 3 other people, one of whom plays TF2 also, and he has not been experiencing these kind of issues.

Can anyone network-oriented shed any light on what might be causing this problem? At this rate, I won't be playing TF2 properly again until I leave Sheffield, which is next June.....

could be a range of things fella
sounds like it might be client specific as its stopping as its sending the info...
try deleting the local content and reinstalling it
but backup your maps first

May also be contention on your network. Does the performance improve when your TF2 mate goes out?

Junta - actually - the last time I tried (and failed) was when he was out of the house... strange.

I had symptoms like this for a long while, so I'll outline what I think the problem was for me.

In my case it was the router. With the high level of incoming UDP traffic in TF2 it thought it was experiencing a DOS attack and blocked this traffic. I got around it in the end by telneting in to the router and turning off the relevant setting.

Your problem may of course be entirely different, but thought I'd mention it.

Well at least it's not caused by your upstream connection, since your mate can connect. That means it is fixable, we just need to figure out how.

But speaking of traffic, erm, did you by chance mess with your rate settings? It may be that your TF2 is firing too many packets, which congests the outbound router leading to a stall. (Inbound is usually non-critic as it's capped on the ISP's end) Had this very same phenomenon at work just yesterday with a colleague's thin client shutting down his router at home from the inside.

Thing to try: Does your trying to play affect your mates ability to play as well?

Regarding any rate changes, if I had done anything it was entirely accidental, networking is far from my strong point - and I'm not silly enough to go playing around with things I don't understand.

TF2 has finished re-installing so i'm going to have another go - will let you know how it goes!

Sadly, the issue is still reoccuring...

Despite this problem I have been considering reformatting my computer as its getting a little sluggish. I'm going to try a complete reformat, and if that doesn't solve the issue, I really don't know what will.

Possible, other reason may be if its virginmedia it will be a bridge not a router, so he would have a bridge and then be connected into a router

What i meant by my original question is, is your mate connected the same way? or do you have other comms equipment is use?

What router & switch do you have?
