Hi All,

Just wondered if you'd thought about having a community tag.  NuB have @NuB, CoW have Calf, just wondered if you'd thought along the same lines for players like me who dont play regularly enough to warrant full membership, but wish to show there association with the clan.

Indeed it has and we've decided not to. Our regulars show there support by frequenting our server and forums. There is also no way to control who wears it. It just takes 1 prick to soil the clans rep on a public server and you may not live it down. We've seen plenty of moronic kids wearing the Calf tag to know thats not the way we want to go.

One of my ideas with the community avatars was to provide an alternative to a tag. If you're a member of the community and playing on the server you can recognise people who use them as supporting the clan, but there's no obvious identifier to tie an individual to the clan if they are used by someone playing elsewhere in a manner that wouldn't be accepted on our server.

That said, many people (I wouldn't be surprised if you fit in this group ) are pretty attached to their own avatars, so it's more something nice for the community players to use if they want to.

True but you could still have trial period etc as you do for a normal member.... Basically I would apply to become a full member but I dont play regularly enough to warrant a clan position or have to contribute how ever much a month and then only play once or twice in that time period.

Can I ask what difference, wearing a community tag would make to you personally?

I think that for players like me a commmunity tag would not make much difference overall but it would simply be a nice way of showing support for the clan whilst being a few months too young too apply for the full clan. I like mode seven's idea of a avatar, and I would like to use the pyro avatar if thats ok with you guys. However, I also agree with papafade in that there are those out there who can damage the clans reputation, and that would be a shame considering how long you have spent building it up. Short of making a new invite only group for community players, I can't see how you would be able to moderate the tags sufficiently to prevent the above from happening.

In [NuB] our @NuB tag is for Associate Members who have to apply in the same way as full members (in fact, we're only taking on Associates at the moment), so the tag isn't available for just anyone to use unless we say they can. We control use of tags on our servers with the Beetlesmod tag protection. We also give Associate Members their own avatars which are differentiated by being green (gold is admin, red is Team A, blue is Team B/community full member).

I've seen the beetlesmod configs for tag protection, nice recommendation Doomy.

An interesting mod for tag protection, but people wearing community tags on our server wouldn't be a big issue. It's users wearing them elsewhere and behaving in a manner not befitting of a clan member. For that there is no control.

At the risk of being devil's advocate here - admins - but are we perhaps not being a bit too sensitive? Look, i think we are over protective, over sensitive and sometimes too conservative. Got that off my chest. Back in line now, reporting for duty on Thursday (thurs is sentries in places you never thought existed time!).

I think that our prior clan experiences have taught Dave and I that a clan can look bad by the actions of a single member. And my god have we met some tools!

That said, we'd obviously be very keen to associate ourselves with people like Egg, Malsky, Dr Evil etc who are excellent and fun community players who show us great support. We have to work on a way that this could be achieved without adding too much complication etc.

I'm always happy to hear peoples opinions and I'm only interested in opening debate and discussion on the topic. Never feel that your opinions won't be heard Gas, always speak your mind In my defence, I feel very strongly about this clan. I want it to be a roaring success and I'm very proud of what we've achieved thus far. Considering the time and money that's been invested in the clan by everyone, you can probably understand our reserve. TBH I'm happy to called over - protective/sensitive/conservative in the circumstances

We're not saying that the Community tags are a total no-no. I guess I want peoples opinion on what the point of them is? I must be missing something?
My opinion is that they serve no purpose. You show support for a clan by playing on their server, posting on their forums, getting involved in events and joining in. If you want to wear tags, join the clan. I guess at the heart of it, it comes down to commitment. How much commitment you can offer to justify your membership of and financial contribution to, a clan.

Do people need to wear a tag of some description to prove they do this? Prove it to who? Surely the only people it will matter to is those that that play there regular anyway? Infrequent users or 'passers by' surely aren't that bothered who wears what, they just want a game? Is wearing a tag that say's ' I'm a part of this community, but not the clan ' a desirable thing? Would something else, less difficult to control, give the same feeling belonging (if that's what people are looking for)?
7's forum avatars are a great idea. It doesn't matter who wears them but it gives a great feeling of unification and continuity in my eyes.

As a clan, we don't demand our players spend a lot of time on our server and forum. Our primary and controlling aim has always been to build a community for older players. We only ask you keep up-to-date through the forum on current issues and events. You play when and where you like. We endeavor to make our sever the one you'd choose to play on, but we don't enforce it.
You just have to ask yourself whether a slot on the server and access to the members areas of the forum is worth the £5 a month? Do our older community players not request to join because of how much time they can offer and don't believe that it justifies the cost?

I want to hear your thoughts guys.

As I said in the other thread, I'm not a fan of community tags (for all the reasons  already listed), though avatars sound like a fine idea. I think it's right that those with the tags have 'earned' them by passing a trial and being active in the forums.

Yes, community tags would be good advertising and we'd probably grow more rapidly - however, there's a definite cost and downside to that. We've got a strong community, and it's nice that you don't see people in WDG tags and think 'hmm, who is that, I've never heard of him'. That's my 2p, anyway.
