Note that it defaults to the "origin edition" which is more expensive since it includes skins and stuff.

Kinda concerning how Blizzard is dodging questions about future paid heroes right now though :/

If they have paid heroes they must be uber confident that people will actually pay for them.

Besides them not being superclear about their payment model for future stuff, I think it's a good compromise. The 21 heroes that are in the game cover pretty much all the roleneeds. If you want to compare it to TF2 (which is accurate imo) you do have your pushers, your defenders, your supporters etc. I can see whatever comes out after that just being alternatives to existing characters sort of like the unlocks in TF2 being for different niche playstyles.

I am surprised tho its not a free2play game, that is very non-Blizzard in 2015. You'd think they could live with a similar economy model like in TF2 where you have all the heroes and then build an economy around cosmetics. The playerbase, even if pay2play or free2play will be huge though.

But then again with HotS Blizzard has proven that theyre willing to think outside the box. They just announced a new hero yesterday that is controlled by two players simultaneously. Its really fascinating seeing what they can do to mix up an established genre. Interesting to see what they will do with Overwatch.

Indeed - this was mostly my surprise at the £30 price line for just the basic pack. I was expecting the £30-£40 "premium" pack for skins, etc. I have pretty much given up with TF2 now but it does seem risky for Blizzard to be putting a similar game to compete with it with a rather large price tag compared to other FPS games or even "pick-up and play multiplayer games" like for instance Rocket League.

Have my own doubts about the game after what they've been doing with Hearthstone but different design team, different ideas. Hopefully.

I have high hopes for competitive. Fact is if you make a game like that people get interested and wanna play it in leagues, SMNC had so much potential to be a good competitive game but the devs ruined it. Blizzard is a guarantee for longterm support. I can see an ETF2L spinoff emerging for this game, the similiarities are definitely big.

I guess theyre going for the price because they can. Blizzard and Valve in my opinion are the only PC devs left that have the advantage of making an online shooter that will be populated for years. They can count on a long build of trust with the community, other publishers dont get this privilege. Best example is Garden Warfare. Its a fantastic game and was a good TF2 like for me for a long time but the PC version was dead on arrival because noone buys those games on this platform. Looking at Call of Duty playernumbers on PC is a great timeline too, when MW2 came out there were hundreds of thousands of people playing and over the years the community lost interest also in thanks to some of the games being crappy ports (Black Ops 1, Ghosts, Advanced Warfare) to a point where Black Ops 3 only has 30k concurrent players a day after launch and some playlists are already empty. Blizzard is going all in on that fact and I think they can pull it off.

I've been watching streams of this (didn't get an invite). Not sure about it being pay to play though. Will enough people get it to form a sufficient player base? I remember Shootmania; a lot seemed to be placed on it being played competitively and the developers put in a lot of work in the comp. community, but it never caught on amongst ordinary players

Ever since the beta came around, I've been getting less and less impressed with Overwatch (And not just because I didn't get in!). I think it's biggest competition is inevitably TF2, but at it's current asking price and with its lack of overall innovation, I'm not sure it's going to be picked up in a big way like Berath mentioned.

Time will tell, but I think I'll be holding off on getting it... Unless I actually get into the beta and change my mind about the game.

Shootmania was just a bad game when it launched and noone cared for it. The trackmania engine was bad for a precise shooter even if it allowed for lots of customization, there were some severe problems in beta that turned people off, the performance was bad, Nadeo made every wrong decision with that game they could have and ultimately the price barrier killed it.

Overwatch isnt really made as a competitive game but can appeal to that scene too (sort of like TF2), and you underestimate the Blizzard factor. People will have a lot of interest in it just because its made by Blizzard, even with a pricepoint. I dont think there will be playerbase issues, its releasing at a good time too when no other games are coming out.

The current beta is a very basic foundation but what is there is quite good, they made a smart decision to not make any more heroes for now, so they have the remaining 6 months to make more maps (which it desperately needs to have any lasting appeal) and on systems around it (like progression, tutorials, maybe even lore? )

I've had the "made by Blizzard" argument put to me already and I'm not too sure how inclined I am to agree with it. Overwatch is a very different game from anything Blizzard has made so far, so the idea that Blizzard fans will jump genres/universes might not necessarily be true. Obviously there will be players who enjoy FPS games and Blizzard titles, but I'm not sure how many Blizzard fans overall will be getting in on the Overwatch action.

And from what I've seen so far the map pool is something they certainly need to work on. Not only adding more, but fixing glaring problems with existing ones such as useless corridors and whatnot; presumably left in when they've changed the maps.
