« on: May 30, 2013, 03:06:43 PM »

Wasn't sure if I should necro an older post about mice but meh...

So it seems my ancient DeathAdder has started melting in my hand (thought it was my new trousers turning my hand black at first, but testing proved otherwise) and seeing as I have birthday moneys still to spend I'm considering getting a shiny new customisable mouse.

The Razer Ouroboros seems to be in the same boat as most of their post-deathadder mice, nice looking, but shaky on the technical side of things and not really worth the elevated price tag.

Currently poking through reviews of the various Cyborg RAT incarnations, any other suggestions or opinions?

I have a R.A.T. 7 and it's pretty decent, probably overpriced though. If you do get one of the R.A.T. series make sure to get a non-texured mouse mat (like the Razer sphex) as the laser doesn't like textured pads.

Ive been using a g700 for over 2 years now, switched to it because I got annoyed at having to deal with a cord on a mouse, I dont notice a difference in response time at all. They also bring you this setpoint software that all logitech mice use where you can edit pretty much anything and make different profiles and set the battery usage. The only downside are the batteries ofcourse but this one in particular chews through them very quickly, like one every 2 days. To make up for it it doesnt lack in response time when the battery is low, which is a problem with most wiredless. Its a bit pricey, but I can definitely recommend it!

Also a more minor thing but this is the only mouse where the mousewheel didnt break or become loose after a year of usage. Since I use it alot for Push To Talk and weapon switching in TF2, thats a big deal for me when buying a new one.

Resurrecting a mouse thread for the sake of posting about my recent adventures in mouseland. After i49 I decided I'd get a new mouse as mine looks pretty disgusting and rather than clean it I thought I'd see what's new in the world of mice.

I did think about getting another of the same of my mouse - the left-handed Deathadder but I kinda assumed that the changes they made to the right-handed Deathadder would also have been applied to the left-handed one in newer models - nope.

So if I didn't get the same as what I have then what else is there? The Deathadder is afaik literally the only ergonomic left-handed mouse so that means it'd have to be an ambidextrous one.

I bought the Razer Taipan as that seemed to fit the bill but I ended up returning it in less than a week because reasons:
- It has no on-board memory, so when the PC boots it forgets it's in left-handed mode until about 30 seconds after my PC has booted, I've logged in and started clicking around on the desktop - not good! Basically, any settings or profiles you set up for the mouse don't work until it's connected to the internet and downloaded them.
- If you use the windows mouse thing to change the buttons, this setting is ignored in League of Legends. I had to play a whole blind pick game with my mouse buttons the wrong way round - which is fucking hard and confusing! Other games (TF2, M:LL, SC2) were absolutely fine.
- It didn't feel as comfortable as my Deathadder.

In summary - the Taipan would probably be fine if you didn't want to install the shitty Synapse 2.0 drivers and you're right handed.

So...onto the next one...

I was looking around at the Roccat and Steelseries mice - I think these companies were pretty small when I bought my Deathadder so was interested in seeing what they had to offer. It basically came down to the Steelseries Sensei and the Roccat Kova+.

By the way - as an aside, I have been very impressed at Currys/PC World - after thinking they were totally shit if you were a gamer or system builder (because they literally never had any decent gaming-grade stuff - peripherals, graphics cards etc. etc.) and they had been for a very long time - I was amazed to go into my local Curry's and find a whole long shelf full of Razer, Roccat, Corsair, Logitech, Steelseries gaming peripherals (mice, pads, keyboards, headsets etc.) etc. - and the prices were pretty reasonable!!

Anyway, I reserved the Kova+ online as it looked alright and I like flashy lights and things like that so I reserved it from Currys online and went down there after work to pick it up. I ended up coming away with the Steelseries Sensei. The feel of it was really nice (nice & rounded), the buttons seemed to be really nice to press and the side buttons were fairly light unlike the Kova+ where they seemed to be a bit heavier to push in.

Now that I've got it home and am using it - it's really nice to use. The software doesn't suck like the Synapse 2.0 software - you can save any profiles you make directly onto the mouse and switch between them without even needing any drivers if you plug it into another PC. The colours you can make with it are pretty cool. The only thing I was a little disappointed with is that the button under the scrollwheel is for DPI switching only - it doesn't look like you can use it as a button. It was also pretty easy to make a little graphic to put on the LCD display on the bottom - as pointless as that is most of the time it adds to the geek factor for me!

My problem is getting mice small enough; I prefer a claw or fingertip grip. Usually if a reviewer says a mouse is too small, I think it might suit me.

Interesting that PC World/Currys now seem to be moving towards stocking proper gaimg peripherals after years of not. And I think PC World sponsored Starcraft 2 at i46, they had a stand. And of course Game were there this summer.

Yup - I think it's only something like 10% of people are lefties and of those, I'd imagine that some of them use the mouse in their right hand, or like I used to do (until like 5-6 years ago) which is to use it in the left hand but with the normal button assignment (which makes right clicking pretty hard on the hands as you have to go over the scrollwheel!)

The left-handed Deathadder is the only ergonomic mouse for left handers and they're not keeping that up to date with their current models.

There's quite a lot of ambidextrous mice out there that are awesome (like my new Sensei and I'd still like to try the Kova+ at some point) but you usually miss out on some nice features of right-handed mice (like having more buttons or better thumb ergonomics).

Look at some of the right-handed mice and compare them to the ambidextrous ones and you'll see what I mean. The Razer Ouroboros is about the only thing that comes close but at £110 and my problems with the Razer Taipan I wouldn't want chance one of those. I also prefer corded mice!

Razer make dumb products for morons. Even if they made the best stuff I wouldn't buy it because their marketing, ad copy,  design, drivers all make me feel like I'm dumb.

Dunno what you mean about right clicking as I mouse left handed with the standard button assignment, though I use an ambidextrous mouse.

I disagree - I think their products are massively overpriced for what they are - taking a basic peripheral and slapping some LEDs on it, labelling it as 'elite gaming gear' and charging twice as much. I don't think their products are actually that bad though, if they were all like 50-75% of the price then they'd be pretty reasonable - the slight problem with the Taipan aside (which would be fine if you were right-handed). Their drivers have never been great though. I wouldn't say it was dumb - it's just aimed at the 'premium' gamer market and they fall slightly short on delivering a 'premium' solution.

Dunno what you mean about right clicking as I mouse left handed with the standard button assignment, though I use an ambidextrous mouse.

Well I used to use the mouse in my left hand and use my first finger on the left mouse button (which I think is what you do?). This means I use 1 finger for all mouse buttons which means having to right click I have to lift my finger to the other side of the mouse - it also becomes a bit of a strain because your hand is at a much more obscure angle. It also makes trying to alternate between click/right-click quickly very difficult.

Ah, no I don't do that, I hold the mouse with first finger on right button, middle finger on left.

Only do it at work though. At home I mouse right handed for gaming or trackball left handed for pleasure.

I wonder if I could game left handed these days.

Razer products are fine, theyre just overpriced as fuck because dumb kids buy into their ad campaigns. That and Steelseries have pretty much become the "cool gaimerz xD" gear.

I bought a lot of Logitech products over the years and was always statisfied and got my moneys worth. You gotta filter out the overpriced stuff in their arsenal though, they have some really cheap mice and keyboards that are great

In general "gaming" gear is overpriced and lower quality than their business/home equivalent.

The main problem is getting things that are of a decent quality which have the features that gamers want to have (macro keys, custom binds, adjustable DPI for mice, comfortable to use for long periods of time etc.).

I guess a lot of these things could potentially be solved with software, not sure if such things exist.

It's a shame, because I'd pay a lot of money for guarenteed good quality, well supported devices, but they don't seem to exist!

I bought my tablet from PC World.

Must say I was expecting a wealth of gaming periperhals when I went in after Deadly's report but I saw no sign  Sad

In fact there wasn't much sign of anything...half the shop seemed to be large screen televisions. They had hardly any tablets on display. I had to ask them to bring out a nexus to show me. They said they had the demonstration model in the back because the alarm kept going off.

In other words, people kept trying to nick it. That's probably it. In Deadly's PC World they have nice customers who have money and gaming pcs and can be trusted. In Tottenham they have a load of tealeafs who'd nick anything smaller than a 27 inch tv that isn't tied down and are probably mainly console gamers  Tongue
