I've been having problems with my ageing PC. Basically I keep getting BSOD on Windows 7. I've ruled out the hard drive, reseated the cooling fan and cleared off the thermal paste (not put any more on though) and am pretty certain now it's either the graphics card, a Radeon HD5770 or the drivers as all the problems started when I installed the latest drivers.
If it's the card I need a replacement as cheap as possible and as good or better. Any suggestions, the 5770 seems to go for around £30 - 50 on ebay still and I was hoping for something better for around £30.

Not putting any paste on (or leaving old, dry paste in) isn't very good. Check Temperatures again now. Use cputemp or sth that reads the temp off the die.
Does it say which file it's in on the BSOD? Do you have a minidump one could analyze?
Memtest? I think there's a GPU load test tool as well.

reseated the cooling fan and cleared off the thermal paste (not put any more on though) WAT? Is there currently no thermal paste between your CPU and heatsink? Sort that out right now! What error code are you getting on the BSOD? It should give you some additional insight to what's causing the problem. Also; does it happen in safemode?

If you've got no paste, or even worse, spotchy paste.. you could be in overheat heaven, even if this all started before you took off the paste, it's not a good idea to leave it off.
Dive into your error logs and see what triggered things before the shutdown. A lack of logs can also help point in the right direction.

If you want to try to narrow it down without delving into the logs:
RAM - As r007 said, memtest CPU/RAM - Prime95 GPU - Furmark or Kombuster / run it alongside something like Afterbhurner or EVGA Precision HDD - Something like Crystal Disk

WD HDD test is pretty reliable as I've seen. Also if you need more info / testing on HDD, use MHDD.

Took me long enough to re-find this link: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.htmlI then realised I could have just started it up and clicked Help-About durrrr But use that to check your various temperatures, as I agree with everyone about the no-paste.

I've found a mystery ATi 2400 pro (no idea where that came from) that I've fitted and the system now runs fine. Looks like my graphics card is buggered

What's your power supply like? There's a chance it could be the power supply not being able to supply enough power to the card (but provide enough for everything else).

It's more likely a variable voltage issue with the card as it has aged. If you do investigate, watch the card voltages when you stress it with furmark, if you get fluctuations as you stress the card or before it blue screens, that's the problem.

The PC is now running fine without the Radeon 5770. Just can't play any modern games, probably best without thermal paste anyway. Now where did I put Baldurs Gate and Transport Tycoon?
Roll on pay day.

I think I have finally diagnosed the problem.
Up to date ATi drivers broke my PC. Have found the original driver disc and everything is working fine with my original card.
Obviously it's cynical marketing exercise to get everyone to buy Xbox Ones

The PC no longer blue screens, it merely freezes dead and it let me have a nice long game of PS2 last night.
Am thinking of actually taking it into a PC repair shop and having a professional diagnosis rather than keep spending money on replacement bits
