I got the slug ship and loving it so far. 1 ion and 2 lasers running with the anti-bio offline. I'm lazy with the ion's tho they take too much micromanagement so i just leave the ion shooting shield while the lasers shoot the weapons and the men board. Then I turn off lasers when arms are down and use the anti-bio on the medbay.
Missiles are great but they run out so quick. I used up over 30 fighting the boss and it wasn't enough - although I did mess up bigtime as I thought I had won so started to troll him. Drones I love the defensive ones, but the offensive ones irritate the hell out of me.
Problem with weapons is some weapons simply have no synergy with others. Half the weapons are about getting through shields and the other half completely ignore shields. But you can't go all out missle, bomb, and boarding drone spamming or you will have none for the boss where they are ultra effective. So effectively I end up with a cargo hold full of missile launchers and bombs for the final fight that i cant use before then.
Upgrading doors is so damn effective for anti-boarding. I rotate the men between the fight and the medbay. On the eng A ship tho anti-boarding is easy. As long as they have someone keeping them busy they aren't going to do any real damage. Venting works well with good doors also. They aren't going to take out more than 1 thing before they die or get the door down on low health to clean up easy.
Stat-wise Mantis look the best, but I just love Rocks.They can always last long enough to teleport out or to get to medbay. Also it's great if you set something on their ship on fire and then pile in with rocks.

shut up huli. I don't use missles enough. Still don't know what i'm doing wrong in engi b, but I have wrestled the other ships. And most of those deaths were trying and failing miserably to understand engi b, or purposefully not shooting missles in kestrel a. I got the no missles achievement on engi a later so i'm having to reteach myself to fire all the missles.
Thats where I died b. My hardcore engi stealth ship I stupidly ran out of fuel could have done it.
Got the zoltan cruiser just now, not great but has the zoltan shields, nearly got the stealth cruiser again in the same run. That little engi ship was the engi ship that could, nearly gave up from early screw ups when i came across the zoltan quest and sold weapons to get me there. Doing it got me a fire beam and for awhile it picked up. Then some mantids came aboard and I lost 3 crewmen. Limped on to the engi quest and picked up some more redshirts but that run was fucked up from the start. I had taken FTL jammer in rare precognisance on my part but a few misses from my missles and I got hammered by the ship I was after.
Mantis have a speed advantage so you can usually run around the ship in circles until the tele is ready for retreat.

Yeah, I noticed this and thought it was weird as it's supposed to be your weapon charging, not acquiring target.

All weapons are 100% accurate, it depends on the enemy ships pilot and engines, I think. If you kill their engines and... er.. steering wheel... you will land all your attacks afaik

yeah but theres no reason you shouldn't be able to counter that effect with sensors a little. Maybe like -15% from enemy evades at level 3 or something.
Just had a good kestrel-b run now im being serious about trying to kill the boss. shield penetration was poor at the end, not my fault as the game decided i didnt deserve any missle launchers. Got a fire beam and 2 level 1 burst lasers though. Was pretty funny, but level 4 shields were too much. I had full engines and cloak, but the bastards breached my cockpit and killed my amazing pilot and that was pretty much game over. At that point I started beaming over and taking down the weapons systems, i didnt notice before how vulnerable it is to that. You only need to knock out the mean ones (laser and rocket spammer).

I imagine that the boss is actually pretty vunerable to boarding as all the weapons rooms are isolated so you can pick them off easily one at a time and they can't repair them.

That tactic worked really well thanks. I completed it with the slug ship using that and ion/lazer offline 2* pegasus online 1 defence drone I online. The ion and lazer really helped when he upped shields, the missiles just tore the ship apart. Teleporting in to the weapons made very quick work of 2 of them while the missles tore apart the others. By the end the ship had no crew at all. Though it still kept fighting it was over before then. My borders were a human and an engi for most of the game after I accidentally blew up a ship I was boarding in sector 3, but I was able to train up a eng for the weapons room just before fighting the boss freeing up a slug for boarding.
I had 90 odd missiles for the last sector and had the achievement for not using any getting up to there. Felt like min/maxing but worked really well.
Cloaking - I found only time I use cloak was when more than 1 missile in the air, or when shields were down. As it is instant it feels like a bit of a cheat.
One other thing - with ion lasers you can train someone up to level 2 weapons in a few minutes. Find an automated scout without shields (or with weak shields). Put ion on autofire, target weapons and go make a cup of tea and have a cig, come back and they are level 2. I found this great for replacing someone with an eng in that position.
I think you could get someone up on piloting and engine using similar tactic in asteroids, though the enemy ship will eventually blow up you can make the battle last about ten minutes or so with ions.

Arrgh, this fucking game.
Was struggling until I unlocked the Engi A, My next run was awesome, I had a loadout that seemed to be super effective - Ion Mk1, Ion Mk 2 and a Pike beam. Rock Armour+Reload augs. Had the Anti Ship drone as well, and manage to pick up three rockmen as my Marines. 90% of the time the enemy is locked down and I take no damage, I'll throw in a drone to speed things up on the tougher ones. Teleporting in the rockmen works well too, especially if the room is already on fire.
Anyway, got to the final sector for the first time, everything was maxed out, I had a full crew of veterans and scrap coming out of my ears. But i hadn't read the instuctions properly, missed the encounter with the final boss and it was game over without even seeing him.
I'm curious about how i'd've done but not sure I want to play for 3-4 hours just to have another crack.

Its on the jump map zarf. It says jumps till in range of base. Its counting flagship jumps though and you can usually get about 2 jumps in yourself for every jump it does but you need to be in front of it and waiting or jumping to its destination when it starts jumping.
