Tbh Guilt if you want to lose weight diet is a lot easier than exercise. Getting in good enough shape to cardio away a significant amount of cals takes a couple months at least.

Just went to gym induction, scary man told me exercise is for fools and that I should just do 15 minutes of resistance training a week. Very confused now.
High Weight, Low rep resistance exercises build up muscles quickly and burns a ton of calories, so it's tripply good for cutting your body fat % and getting you looking good quicky (Muscles take quite a lot of energy to run even when you're not doing anything, so you burn more calories a day).
Cardio has it's place though, It's great for your heart and lungs (Cardiovascular system, hence the name) and obviously helps you get around places or do sports without getting sweaty and tired after 5 minutes.
Unless you are training for something specific you don't need too much, two or three 20-30 minute sessions a week will keep you pretty fit.  

But yeah, diet is massively more important than any exercise if you are trying to lose fat.

I don't really care about losing weight anymore as I lost a stone and a half last year but I do want to be fitter in terms of being able to walk to work without getting a bead on, lol.

Weird thing is that I can get in a most pit and rape people for 2 hours straight until my clothes are as wet as if I'd jumped in a pool but when it comes to exercise I get out of breath way to fast . I also have issues getting off the sofa or chair by my pc. I find it really hard to motivate myself into doing anything.

Can't speak for what works for everyone, but I think the most important things starting out are:

Getting stuff on a routine - So work out how much time you can afford to spend on exercise per week, work out when you want to spend it, and then stick to that plan like glue. Don't let up on it, don't kid yourself that you can take the days off because of the weather or a tough day or whatever. Even if it's a tiny commitment (30 minutes 3x a week?) if you get into the routine of it things get easier.
Taking stuff at your own pace - Whilst you gotta stick to your routine, I don't think obsessing about 1 thousand things when starting out is worthwhile. Trying to lock in a diet, cardio, strength work, etc etc all at the same time will probably end up with you not wanting to do any of it. Start slow and start stupid until you get the habit, then iterate to get something that gives you what you want.
Measuring progress - Make a note somewhere of what you're doing and when. You can use Fitocracy or whatever else, but it's a useful reinforcement to be able to look back and see that you've done something three times a week for two weeks. If you can do something three times a week for six weeks you can probably do it forever.

I know that fitness stuff is boring and crappy tez. But we're all falling apart, what you've got right now you won't have forever, so you may as well see a bit of what it can do before its taken away from you.

I can't really change my diet as I cook for Liz and she won't want to change her eating patterns, but our diet isn't too bad anyway. As for routine I totally get that it's the most important part to keeping up doing it but the problem is that my shift patterns at work are pretty fluid. My days off change and so do my hours. I can finish anywhere between 1 and 8. Ifbi finish at 8 I'm often backing at 6 or 7 meaning I have to pretty much go straight to bed. I'll try and be inventive and work around it.

Yeah I wouldn't suggest trying to change your diet at all if you just want to get a bit fitter. Diet only really matters if you wanna gain/lose weight or are doing really serious training. If you just want to find it easier to walk to work I doubt you'd need to change anything there and if you tried to, it might end up being too much change at once.

I'd just say do some sort of cardio on the reg. I like c25k like zarf has been doing because it's so mindless and widespread. Just run with the lady says run and walk when she says walk.  Doesn't require any more gear than an mp3 player and running shoes. But its important to do something you enjoy. Would say most cardio work is pretty dire until you can do it non stop for 40 mins or so. Once you get to that level it starts to become more interesting and less like having someone kick you in the lungs for a half hour.

Shift work is difficult, just try to be as regular as you can and make things into a habit.

C25K looks pretty awesome tbh and as it's three sessions in a week should be able to fit it around my work. Now i just need to find a route that I can jog that won't get me stabbed.

Yeah mine never posts to farcebook or twitter. Pretty sure you can turn it off somewhere though I'm not sure where. Don't think it does it by default but could be wrong. Lots of c25k apps and stuff, or if you don't want to take your phone out you can google podrunner intervals which has MP3s that you can use so you only need a cheapo mp3 player. Shitty music but in my experience you end up hating any music you exercise to anyway...

I want to use my phone with an app so I can listen to my own music, would rather not get robbed though. It's a tough decision.

Wasn't an issue before but I just got a new Samsung Galaxy S3 and my boss got the shit kicked out of him on Monday on his way to work and they took his phone and bank card.

Also is there an Android app you can recommend? there are loads.

Think Zarf and Deaders might have app reccs. I used mp3s. Don't spend too long looking for the super perfect ultimo app though because for something as simple as c25k it prolly doesn't matter. Imagine any of the base ones could do what you need, which is basically to beep at timed intervals. You could probably do it yourself  with a cheap digital watch with a stopwatch on it...

Just got back from my first C25k run/walk. Was pretty good. Felt pretty battered after the first jog but after my body realising that moaning wasn't going to change anything it got a lot easier. Towards the end I felt that I should be jogging for longer but I'll stick with the plan and try not to overexert myself.

Stick to the plan. Normally your cardio system is in advance of your mechanical ones so you'll feel OK to run harder and then strain something.
