There's plenty of women starting characters around too. One of my favourite AARs from CK2 is based on Sibylla of Jerusalem in the days of the Crusades.

Discordance - with marriage it is not so much about if they like you or not it is more about what they will get out of the marriage.

They want alliances and titles and claims and good skills as much as you do. They also have no quams on interbreeding to keep things in the family. Be carefull of too much interbreeding though as it can produce undesirable traits such as hairlips, club foot, and other afflictions and it can lead to an interesting court with everyone trying to kill each other (good outcome - keeps them too busy to fight you) or one person collecting too much power (very bad outcome unless it's you or your son).

With sons and daughters you will have to compromise and decide what you want the most and what you can get. If not an heir your son or daughter isn't going to have great choice, plus your children will get claims on what you have. If they move to another court and become powerful they can be  a pain generations later. Alliances very much depend on the power of the person you are allied with, if they have the freedom to act (do they have a leige and does he let them act), how far away are they (they won't care too much if you are too far away), how well they get on with your enemy, how well they get on with you, and also if you really want to get bogged down helping them or if you plan they are the ones who will get bogged down helping you. They aren't stupid though and they will be pragmatic in their relationship with you. If they see you as easy pickings they will use the claims they generate from marriage to take you out.

From the start - following Chungs objectives is a great way to go. Your objectives will be sort out getting some children and try and get some claims on weak neighbours whilst building up a warchest so you can hire mercenaries, and picking up some of the objectives from the intreige screen. Also put one advisor in neighbour to formulate claims, another to raise funds in your capital, your spymaster deployed how you like, and your cardinal usually to improve relationship with your clergy (rotate him around).

Getting clergy on your side with your cardinel can mean you raise more funds more quickly and also get access to more troops.

Your other vassals are nice to keep happy but Counts won't be paying you money unless you have laws which tax them and many starting positions you won't have. So the worst part about having them unhappy is they revolt which can be a very good thing if you want to directly own more land and make more money.

Well I'm hooked now. Started as Duke of Brandenburg with one county and one vassal count. Am currently King of Pomerania (Extensive vassal warring and strategic marriages then thanks to marrying a pagan for a claim on prussia and accidentally making my heir pagan, spending his entire reign working his cynical ass for peity, got the kingdom just in time then he died and it went to a catholic heir lol (pomerania needs pagan to create)) warring with Denmark and plotting to murder the Duke of Brunswick who has been harassing my family for a few generations even going so far as killing my foreign wife. He will pay, soon i'll be ready to stomp him and then claim king of germany. Might finish taking denmark first though.

damn duke of brunswick. Somehow he fabricated a claim for the final duchy of denmark letting him take 3 counties in one go. Then despite us only owning 5 de jure counties each out of the required 6 he managed to usurp the crown? And now King Denmark has gone to war on vassals of the emperor (2 of the counties of denmark belong to bishop vassals of the emperor and crown authority is high). Which neither of us is allowed to do. Goddamn you brunswick. Can't even declare war on him atm and denmark especially the counties he robbed have a lot of troop supply. Going to go bully poland before I start Royal fisticuffs.

Any idea whats going on chug? is the ai just cheating? I checked his war status It seems the emperor went to war with him about something the first time. But this time its Kingdom of Denmark in Du Jure claim over a vassal of the emperor, which is prohibited by crown law. Am I missing some way of bypassing them or is the ai just totally ignoring the rules.

LATER: was an excommunication I think? followed by a war declared for it. But even if I get another vassal excommunicated pretty sure I still can't attack even though he can.

anti-climax today. The duke of brunswick never secured his power base very well or claimed the kingdom of germany there, he ended up being usurped from his duchy by members of the dutch royal family and the clergy revolted and instigated a theocracy in the counties that were traditionally church property. I added to the chaos by marrying a danish princess (which is paying off now, pressing a claim on skane) and then pissing off her husband one of my dukes who started his own revolt in denmark against me (I still hold about 40% of denmark). I assassinated a child duke of brunswick as well that was probably what triggered the danes to take control.

Anyway I was basically still hoping to destroy brunswick in a big glorious war but it looks like my assassination will have to do his holdings are all in the hands of danes and denmark just imploded. Me and some plotters had a big civil war in the HRE for lower crown authority and ended in white peace which immediately led to denmark going down in flames. Lols.

Kinda gutted that i'm never in a position for a crusade though. Whenever we get round to playing this mp can't decide if i want to play rise from a duke again, or start as a king whatever and go on crusades.

You can go on crusades as a duke, I think? One of my rivals just raised an army and trekked off, which seemed like the perfect time to press a vassals claim and go to war. Poor guy nearly made it back too, was just off my coast before his garrison fell and his army dispersed around him.

well yeah I mean I could crusade but as a duke its risky and you only get a few small bonuses? Most of the lands won in the crusade go to the largest contributor, so guy with biggest army. I've been stuck on medium crown authority for awhile so I could start crusading now, but the poles keep having civil wars which I use to bite off small chunks of poland. Although my current king just died before I had a chance to press his fraudulent claims on two of polish duchies, gonna be awhile before my sucky chancellor writes me up some new ones. Also I need to stop wasting cash on false claims I can't press.

playing less atm still got 200 years left ffffff. Progress from today though I just noticed the duchy of brunswick was my vassal, turns out he had been since 5 years ago in the previous kings reign, the duke of prussia was heir to brunswick and for whatever reason the game doesnt notify that hey your vassal just inherited another duchy. So yeah brunswick went out with a fizzle and now I've totally defeated him, if only I could figure out a plot to take the rest of denmark hmm. Poland is coming along nicely, previous king again bloody died with 2 unpressed claims on polish duchies but this king quickly claimed and conquered 2 counties, both of which allowed me to steal their duchies and have du jure to continue my march on poland. One more duchy I think maybe and I can usurp the kingdom?

Gah, Holy Roman Empire is having problems, got about 9 internal wars going on right now mostly for independance. I am heir to the empire by miles. Not sure what to do, I could easily join the rebellions and conquer some de jure counties I lost long ago, which would also bash the crown authority down to limited, which is great for the king of pomerania i'd get to stay inside the empire and happily trample other vassals, and maybe gain some of our land back. But I could just go the other road and help supress the rebellions/independants, secure the authority of the empire and just hope some other dick doesn't get elected in the meantime. Losing my bid on the empire wouldn't cost too much i'd just have to step on the poles some more still don't have that crown, but potentially the biggest gain if I secure the empire and put down all the rebellions. I've got about 18k troops ready to go which is more than the empire itself is currently fielding.
