Been meaning to post about this for a while, but since it's on sale for the next 5 hours now is a good time. This is probably the best Paradox game I've played in a while- a sprawling medieval ruler simulator set from 1066 to 1453. The unique selling point for the CK games is the scope of control; you basically play as an individual noble, ranking from Count to Emperor. When you die, control transfers to your heir, and so on until either you hit 1453 or your dynasty is wiped out. The game is populated with thousands of other individuals, who may well actually rule over you. Wars can't be initiated without a "good reason" (although you can try and get someone to fabricate one for you). It's complex and slow, but utterly unique and often good fun.

You'll probably like it if at least one of the below is true:
- You're a fan of strategy games;
- You've read/watched Game of Thrones and thought 'I'd like to play a game like this' (there is naturally already a GoT mod for it);
- You get a huge boner for the feudal system

You probably won't like it if:
- You constantly need action to be happening all the time;
- You don't like crazy depth of complexity;

Also it has multiplayer, which is basically identical to the single player but with additional joy when someone declares themselves king over everyone else and starts raising taxes madly.

Not that I've played multiplayer yet, but the way titles work is that you have to hold x% of the lesser titles traditionally under a desired title. For example, in my SP game I'm currently Duke of Connacht and hold one of the counties of the Duchy of Ulster. If I can possess one other Ulster county I can declare myself Duke of Ulster, and then since I hold 2 of the 5 duchies of Ireland I can declare myself KING OF ALL IRELAND. Likely to cause interesting mutterings among the other dukes, particularly since some of them may feel they have an equal right to be King.

So yeah, all about maneuvering and declarations. Also if one player has others as vassals they can give them wonderful honorary titles such as 'Court Fool'.

Thought I'd kill time waiting for a colleague to ring me back with a story from my game. One of the key subtleties of a game is marriage- unifying families is a great of collecting a nice set of alliances and claims, and with this in mind one of my first actions in my current Irish game was to marry off my heir to a Portugese princess, cementing an alliance with the King of Portugal and meaning that their children would have a claim on most of the Portugese lands. Two things then happened:
1) All characters have a 'culture' that they inherit from their parents. In this case, the eldest son (who I'm currently playing as) inherited his mother's Basque nationality rather than his father's Irishness. This means that every Irish person dislikes him by default, as they consider him to be a foreigner.
2) About 10 years after their marriage the Kingdom of Portugal imploded spectacularly, first into civil war and then getting roflstomped by Muslim invasion. When this happened the courtiers of Portugal started emigrating to the courts of the royal family outside Portugal around Europe i.e. mine and one other. This meant that my court suddenly swelled from 12 fairly calm Irish courtiers to a hotbed of 45 mostly Portugese people, most of whom hate each other. On average I now discover 2-3 plots a year and am constantly pressured by the immigrants to put the admittedly competent people into positions of power.

Like I said, no game like it.

I recently watched 'The Borgia', the canal+ plus version about a 15th century Italian crime family and I thought it was awesome. This game sounds like basically that. Only with less boobs and men being sawn in half genitals first.

Back when the don was the pope. The borgia of assassins creed are based on the same. Chug I bought this because I am a sucker. Play some civ 5 with me and i'll murder your children in CK2.

I did all the tutorials, started playing as a duke. Tried to arrange a marriage to a neighbouring pagan but even after bribes he thought i was too shit. Then I gave up because what? Seems like the game could use a few missions or something at least to get you started.

Yeah, sandbox mentality is the name of the game. I guess the general objective is to expand and gain in power, but don't expect to just stomp everyone with raw power unless you've got claims and money coming out of your ears. I spent most of my first generation marrying off my non-heirs in the dynasty so as soon as soon as the next generation came around I started getting claims to press nearby for everyone else.

I need a bit of mission handholding before I jump into full on sandbox, i mean if we actually play this mp it will be a sandbox where the aim is to cut off the balls of house chug, which gives great purpose. But I kinda got lost in singleplayer because oh shit where is there so much information and things.
