I've always had a problem with crashes in TF2, particularly ones where my NVIDIA driver crashes and I'm left with a screen full of artifacts or a black screen. In the past I would Alt-Tab back to the desktop and then back to the game and that would fix the problem. However, now that Valve have "fixed" Alt-Tabbing this no longer happens and the graphical glitches are still there. Occaisionally I can blindly pull up the console and cure via a Retry, but most often I have to crash the game and restart (bloody annoying if you've just waited to join a full server). Does anyone have any ideas how I can force the graphics engine to reinitialise without restarting TF2? Is there a console command?

I use

bind "home" "record fix; stop;echo **FIX VISUALS**"

to fix bugs like the hud showing the wrong color etc. Not sure if it will fix your problems too.

This used to work for me when I had similar problems.

There's also hud_reloadscheme which re-loads the hud if that's what's playing up.

You could also try running TF2 in borderless window mode, maybe that will fix the nvidia crashes. In your launch options type in "-window -noborder -w *MONITORWIDTH* -h *MONITORHEIGTH*". Theres no major differences here, on some occasions it could cause a little fps loss, some people (like me) even gain more fps with it. The huge advantage of it is flawless alttabbing, since its running in windowmode, but with -noborder, it looks the same.

You could also just put it on windowmode in options and then use ShiftWindow

I already use the record fix for HUD colour issues. The graphics problem I'm getting is a driver failure, I just need to be able to force it to reinitialise!

maybe fixing the underlying issue will do more good? Driver crashes are a symptom of other, potentially expensive problems.

I've been getting the same driver crashes since I started playing TF2 in October 2007! No problems with any other games, so I think I can safely say that it's TF2...
