Being at University, I use a laptop for the majority of what I do.
It's a beast of a system (for a laptop), but having been playing al ot of Skyrim recently, overheating is definitely becoming an issue. I currently use a laptop cooling pad, but I can't say it's the most effective (though is does make a huge difference).
Can anyone recommend an effective one or any tips to reduce heat output without effecting performance?

Hmm, so far not had any problems with my laptop, but maybe BF3 isn't as demanding as Skyrim. I use the Belkin cooler pad (usb powered).
Previously with my old laptop I had problems in the summer..i used one of those cooling pads with gel or something inside.

Well I'm running Skyrim on what could be considered Mid+/High settings and it runs incredibly smoothly for the first 15 minutes. After that, as it starts to heat it slowly dwindles. The cooling pad maintains this (and does help) but you need to constantly move the laptop around so the heat exhaust is directly over the cooling area so it maximises the cooling (the cooling pad is far too small for a laptop of this size).

Well maybe buy a bigger cooling pad....mine is made for 17 inch laptops, my laptop size. My processor is a 6990m which is supposed to be a bit of heat generator.
I also know that some coolers are a bit fancy with cooling channels and everything...look out for one of those perhaps?

I don't know about pads but if the performance of them dwindles over time maybe try cooling fans? You might also want to check for any dust inside restricting airflow considering how compact laptops are.

Usual causes of this: Dust in radiator fins; dried out thermal paste. Open that motherhubbard up and give it a thorough overhaul.

I have issues too, but the thing is, I know how to open everything up and fix this sort of stuff with a desktop, with a laptop I am somewhat clueless.

Worst part is usually removing the keyboard, since its attachment is often not immediately evident, but some important screws are hidden underneath.
Try finding a service manual for your laptop online first. Those help a lot.

Right well I have none of these, I'm more than likely just going to get it looked at.
