Stretches the mind  I love it all, that sort of thing. I was at an SF convention and this mathematician was giving us a talk about Hotel Infinity. Then another mathematician leapt up because he saw a flaw in the presentation. Then they started this debate, scribbling equations on the board, evaluating proofs, demonstrating arguments...it was brilliant! (though I don't think us in the audience quite followed it all  ) |

Regarding the plane on a treadmill .. Yes it would take off as long as the airofoil reaches sufficeint airspeed , remeber the planes engines dont affect the wheels . Air speed and ground speed are 2 totally different things . I know id sounds daft but the rolling floor wouldnt affect the aircraft.

Ive often wondered about gravitational lensing and how it does or could affect what we see . Perhaps the universe isnt how it appears to be ie. it could all be a reflection.

This could be very much so. A fish in a fish bowl will see a different view of the world to us, doesn't mean its view is wrong because the fish could formulate laws of physics that describes the motion of objects that would appear to have curved trajectories and in the fish's frame of reference it will always be true (to us wrong). I read about it somewhere, can't remember where though. |

Say it was theoretically possible to create a steel bar which was unaffected by the force of gravity regardless how long it became (imagine an 'anti' particle accelerator model, an exact straight line rather than a line with such minor angle changes that from the point of view on earth it seems perfectly straight when in fact it is circular).
If the factory producing such a steel bar kept producing it until it surpassed the curvature of the earth, how would it look from a first person point of view?
Appologies for bizarre question, I asked my science teacher this when I was loosely 11, can't remember what her response was. This was either because she didn't know, or I had explained it incredibly badly, more than likely the latter.
I always imagined in my head for it to appear to be curving up into the sky.

I like the angle of the question (pun semi intentional)
I will say... erm..
either the earth and the bar would both appear to your mind as straight, but both curve away so neither looks straight (I say this because I think your underlying knowledge that the ground is straight and flat will over ride your eye)
..aha... it wouldn't look like it was curving... it would just look elevated, like at 5 degrees inclined (though I know it isn't), but flat... a bit like a straight ramp
