So yeah, imagine I then went 2000 miles in a straight direction (the same direction as the bar), what would it look like then?

Hmmm... Good question, 2000miles using some rough figures in my head i'd guesstimate you would be at least 30 miles vertically from the surface. The bar and earth would meet at one horizon where your tangent hit, and the other end of the bar would be heading off into space.
At that height you would be seeing at least 25 degrees of curvature of the earth, so it would have a definite round horizon.

Yeah those were my thoughts exactly, but I actually think hawt means same direction as the bar but standing on the earth - so instead of seeing the earth's 25 degree curvature, the question is whether the bar would appear to have a 25 degree curvature upwards.

Wasn't there a high profile court case in America when this became part of the curriculum to satiate god botherers who didn't want to accept God not playing a direct part in Evolution?

I believe the case had the same outcome - it held no scientific basis whatsoever and therefore under the constitution, must be kept isolated from the education system.

A collegue of mine asked me a question today, is there any item that have reached its design zenith? ie no matter what technological advance appears will never be improved upon.
I can think of one the humble sock, I cant see any advances that will make it any better than it already is and think even in 500 years we will still be wearing socks pretty much the same as today.

Can anyone think of any others?

Back to a serious discussion of the original point (a forlorn hope, I know, but humour me for five minutes), it would be difficult to find an advancement without excluding technologies that could be improved purely by the same concept in an advanced material. ie. a mug could be improved by insulation, a spoon by something more stain resistant/easier to clean.

I was considering semi-seriously suggesting some form of alcohol, like beer or vodka. Obviously everyone has different tastes, but beer has been brewed in roughly the same way for millenia now, with changes in small elements, like types of finings etc. Then the consideration comes in as to whether we're just judging the product itself or the technology used to produce it, with modern brewing methods being extremely advanced. Though personally of course I'd rather have a nice ale brewed with somewhat simpler methods than mass produced lager.
