Never was a fan of him, and the almost cult-like status he created with some (definitely not all) apple-product-users, but truth be told, his ideas and technological achievements cannot be neglected.

I hold tremendous respect for the man though...

I never liked that he was put on a pedestal as some tech genius when apple products were never that great in my eyes, but he did an absolutely wonderful job of kicking all sorts of tech industries up the arse and pushing progress forward. mp3 players and smartphones and tablets would all be a bit shit still if nokia and everyone else had been allowed to plod slowly on. And pixar single handedly saved western animation.

I am sort of in the Naftman camp. It's a sad day that a creative designer has died at quite a young age (56?) but I can't stand the ridiculous response to his death - he just designed/thought up consumer goods. CONSUMER GOODS. He didn't 'change the world'. I'll happily admit he was a clever man with great ideas and marketing skills and managed to completely turn a company around.

If you don't know what I'm talking about:

Quote
"What he's done for us as a culture, it resonates uniquely in every person,"
"lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being"
"bold enough to believe he could change the world"
"had made the world "immeasurably better""

And that's just quotes from that one article.

I'd say all those quotes are pretty true except for the bit about making the world better. Without Pixar, itunes, ipods and iphones the world would be very different and pretty much everyone in western culture is completely affected by them. The company under him has shaped industrial design and human computer interfaces for the past few years and probably will for the next few.

He's not my hero or anything, but he knew what he wanted to do and did it with ability and clarity that very few people manage.

After reading the last half-sentence of the official note on apples page (http://www.apple.com/stevejobs/) I can't help but have the feeling they just uploaded his consciousness to iCloud.

RiP your Steveness.

And yes, I agree that the media make more ado about it then I feel is necessary.

It's like Stockholm syndrome on an international level.

The guy has spent years locking away your music, information, contacts, walling in your information and charging you hand over fist for this 'privilege'

Don't get me wrong... there is a lot of shiny stuff out there that he had a PART in making.

But he was not fucking Jesus, he did not cure cancer, he did not cure famine, he did not take down a dictatorship.

Don't get me wrong, I don't wish any harm to him, I didn't want him to die, and I do hope he rests in peace.

I'm not glad he is dead, but I am glad he will no longer be able to fuck with the IT world and try and change the whole system that pays him for destroying standards and monopolising his existing position.

Don't be daft. It's hardly brainwashing, and I'm not sure what your definition of a monopoly is if Apple have one.

I don't own much Apple stuff, but the competition made everyone work harder, and it's fairly rare in the computer world to see, well, 'design-led' products actually sell. I see far more people complaining about how he didn't save the world than anyone saying he /did/ those things.

A human died, which is always tragic, especially this (relatively) young.
This particular human had a huge influence on the IT world.

Can't we just leave it at that?
