I did almost get myself killed. The first time I went through, I had to dig far underground to get to the correct Y-coordinate, and then realised I'd forgotten flint and couldn't set light to the gate. I then ran out of pickaxes digging my way out and ended up punching through netherrack trying to get back to the active portal.

At least I'll know to be better prepared next time. Cheesy

Fair enough, I knew that there wasn't any sort of 1/8 scaling for the Y, didn't know if it was otherwise dependent. Honestly just didn't want to take the risk!

you can use the ignorance of y to make vertical transporters. Just link two next to each other in the nether and put the overworld ones at different heights. Makes a handy mineshaft descender.
