old android phones get left by the roadside but theres a decent modding scene (wish i could code linux kernels and have a fiddle myself). If you can get your phone unlocked you should theoretically be able to extend your phones life for free with the occasional manual upgrade. The OS is getting more demanding though and the scaling as I understand isn't great at the moment. But android is about to hit TVs as well as become the unified OS between tvs, phones, tablets so I hope scaling will be in place right down to "underpowered" devices.

what are your thoughts on icloud r007? It appears to finally deliver free syncing that android has had for years but would you consider using that (if say you upgrade to ip5?).

Final i don't really know much about the other models but the new orange monte carlo for low budget, htc wildfire is decent midrange my sister and a few mates have one. If you can afford to take a splash HTC sensation I think? Need to check out the reviews but its the next htc flagship after desire.

Battery power for me is one thing though; anyone got usage amounts? If I want to replace my MP3 player, it might be running as a music device a lot!
Its very dependant on what you have running, you need to be careful with your settings, watch what you install and use the battery monitor. As for MP3 I could run my phone down just using it as music in the morning and evening (my email program was setup badly and checking too frequently I think). I'd certainly recommend packing a usb cable and plugging in whenever you can.

Anyone got any other smartphone recommendations? No price limit, but certainly I'd want SD card support (so I can fit a 32GB card) and the latest Android version.

Seeing as I already have that kind of service, and will keep my server (for web, vpn, firewall penetration, etc.) in any case, I probably don't think so. At least I didn't see an iCloud announcement/rumor that made me go "WANTwantwantWANT!". Ok, I'll just visit the iCloud site now... You just wait here...

Hm, best features to me are iTunes Match and the downloadable iTunes Purchase history, I'd appreciate a good web interface to my calendar as well. "Backup" (i.e. personal data on my Phone uploaded to iCloud) is a severe no-go which I will disable, if need be by hacking the phone. I don't share documentso or photos on-line much, so not too excited about that. The rest of the service I really already have, so meh.

€dit: If the past is any indication however, I would hope that I can set the backup destination to simply a WebDAV store via configuration profile. That configuration tool meant for businesses is _extensive_!

I can see however that customers with no own backend infrastructure will be drawn to it, the level of comfort is surely similar as embracing the google.

Battery power for me is one thing though; anyone got usage amounts? If I want to replace my MP3 player, it might be running as a music device a lot!
When it was brand new, I could get a days worth of listening out of my fully charged iPhone (background checking for mail every 30 mins, and maybe surf 2 websites; active display strains the battery a lot). Nowadays it's more like half a day, which is not that much of an issue, since a charge to 75% takes about 30 minutes and I often spend half an hour in front of a computer or power socket every half day. I've been using my phone as an MP3 player lately and although yeah, you can charge up every so often when you're in front of a computer, it's pretty shit when you compare it to my beater Sansa Clip that I got a million years ago and has enough battery to last a couple of weeks.

The worst part is, half the time I'm at an actual computer, but the company network won't let me on Spotify.

Thanks Magathery, will take a look at those in more detail; seems those are the kind of thing I might want. Not sure about contracts etc. yet, just want to check and see what the mid-to-top range ones are like so cost isn't an issue as such.

Battery power is a bigger issue for me compared to any other feature simply because I want to be able to use it for a fair while without plugging it into a PC, such as when travelling; the MP3 player is the main offline thing I'd likely use it for though. I get royally annoyed when phones run out of charge at the best of times, I'm willing to have a fatter phone for more battery power!

How long are you wanting to run for without a charge? Even with all the power saving tricks & apps, smartphones (imo) just aren't very good at it. Bigger phones tend to mean bigger screens and thus more power. I still carry a smartphone and an ipod, I'm afraid.

I generally stick my phone on charge every night as I use it as an alarm clock. My HTC desire will last for 2-3 days with the amount I use it. If I use it a lot for games, internet, music etc. then I usually have to charge it every day.

heres the sensation final

http://shop.o2.co.uk/mobile_phone/pay_monthly/init/HTC/Sensation?cm_mmc=googleuk-_-postpay-_-HTC_Sensation_-_-HTC_Sensation_GGL_Phrase

I can't really tell the difference tbh, the desire had better reviews than the old galaxy but I have no idea about galaxy 2 versus the sensation and I don't think they are even that different.

Yeah, I hacked together a dock (Official one was too expensive, i don't need HDMI out!), so my Streak works as my bedside alarm really well. Recommend the "Alarm Clock Plus" App.

Once a night is fine, I can deal with that, charging during the day would be a real pain though; not that I don't work in IT at a pretty much a desk job, but that it is not good for travelling; the times you want to use it most Cheesy

I'll use HTC and 1 charge per day as a reference Deadly; I just have no idea how they perform, people are always so vague! Smiley

After all your helpful advice I popped into phones4u, ignored it all and bought a Samsung Galaxy Fit for £89. Must be good, Mrs Bystander is jealous.

Edit: After a couple of hours of use I can't imagine like without a smartphone.  As powerful as a 10 year old PC and 10 times more versatile.  Second best buy I've ever made for under £100
