Google are launching their first serious attempt at taking on Facebook. It's on an Invite only basis atm though.

Looks really good, great system for dividing your contacts up into groups (which they call "circles") so you don't share info with people you wouldn't want to, which is my main complaint with Facebook (Friend Lists seem to be totally worthless, can't actually use them anywhere)
It's also well integrated with Googles other products, so sharing youtube videos or your existing Picasa albums is easy and it has robust chat and video conferencing.

Thoughts? I think they're really trying this time, enough to be a complete Facebook replacement rather than an extra network like Wave or Buzz was.

Can't be worse than facebook and the circles thing might finally allow me to talk to different kinds of friends.

Multi-video chat looks nice too. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to start a video conference with 3 people.

I think it could take off, I barely use Facebook now because my news feed is cluttered up with people I don't care about and I can't post anything because I can't easily control who sees it.
Starting fresh with a system that's able to grow in a controlled and organised manner seems pretty appealing. I could see myself using Google+ for keeping in contact with actual friends, whilst facebook is just there for relatives and old school friends.

If facebook steal the circles idea then there's no point it existing.

In conclusion, it's just another place for 4chan to hack if they take an interest in you.

The Circles concept and demand for better friends segregation has been around for years, but facebook haven't done anything about it yet. I can only conclude they hate people.

That's why I don't really use my Facebook account.

Too much nonsense from people I don't really know, plus the inability to properly group various categories of friends.

There's people I don't want to know I game and all of that sort of stuff; school friends etc who would just be so nonplussed and wouldn't understand. I've been outed before and it's weird.

And if I couldn't talk about what I wanted to on Facebook, what's the point.

Hmm to be honest Facebook have had 'circles' for ages. Its called lists. You can create lists and add friends either via academic/work groups etc automatically, or create your own. When you post stuff there is a little drop down where you can pick who you share it with - either everyone, friends or just one of your lists.

Facebook also recently introduced a new 'like button' for sites called 'recommend' or something similar where instead of sharing stuff from 3rd party sites with everyone you can send it to specific groups of people. e.g. TF2 stuff only to people who play TF2.

Reason it is so fiddly and hard to find is that apparently they found people couldn't be arsed with it. To much effort organising people. Apparently people would spend some time setting it up to start and then couldn't be bothered to come back and edit it.

Can't see this working for the same reason. Plus its no fun being on a 'social' network where none of your friends are. Facebook already have to large a hold IMO - not broken up across multiple networks like back in the day with MySpace, Bebo etc which Facebook were able to take advantage off. I think Diaspora were the only ones who had half a chance of being serious competition back when FB was realing from all the negative PR over privacy issues but they have taken far too long to release anything that everyone has forgotten/lost interest in them.

EDIT: having just looked at it again they have removed the option to post stuff only to 'lists' of people directly (not hard to add it back in!). Functionality is all there if they decide to use it. Same with what you see on your wall. You can already filter some of it.

Yeah, this pissed me off - Organised all my "friends" into different lists only to find the expected functionality was missing. For me ATM Facebook is broken, news feed full of people i care little about but don't want to unfriend, And I CBA to post anything because I know that for 90% of people it'd just be rubbish to them from someone they care little about.

If you go to Account -> Edit Friends --- You can then create lists.

You can filter your wall by lists too just noticed.

So only thing missing is to send 'public' posts to specific lists only. Pretty sure you can share stuff via the recommend button to specific lists/friends via message - but atm you can't send a message to a list -.-

As a say I read an article about 12 months ago where Zuckerberg had felt lists were this awesome idea but got abandoned because no one really used it. Will likely be having a makeover atm given Facebook's love of copying other sites/ideas.

Yeah well that is all off the back of Facebook deciding Twitter were a huge threat and incorporating almost all their functionality. Its the main reason I hardly use the FB anymore. When I started using it (was at one of the first Uni's who were given access) it was extremely private. Everyone posted messages to each others wall - ie communicating to specific people. There was no stream. It was all based on Uni groups.

Now I just use Twitter for latest updates on what is happening news wise and my phone/email for communicating.

It's not that I like facebook. It's ok but I think they are cheeky, very cheeky with having it their way or the high way.

However it's just one more way that google will know everything.  If google opened a bank they would know absolutely everything about my life :-/

Though at the same time they do like to integrate things and make public services (not saying they are perfect, but a lot better than other big companies).

Good thing I never had a facebook account. Then again, I wouldn't trust google even with my eMail-address if I could, but unfortunately cooperating with people that "embraced the Google" requires that. Never ever am I going to join a social network run by them.
