[Guilt]

Im thinking about a home network but don't know where to start can anyone with knowledge let me know what is possible for what kind of money, situation as follows.

My main PC upstairs has SSD drive boot and 4x 1TB Samsung F3 HDD 1 has steam on, 1 is a backup of the system and steam drives. The other 2 contain identical copies of my photos and HD camcorder video which is about 850GB at the moment and growing fast

I can't really fit another 2 drives in my PC for more HD video and HDDs are so much cheaper than writable blue-rays at the moment.

The Missus also keeps moaning that all the video and pictures of the baby are on my PC where she can't view them, I also don't like having multiple copies over different PC's

So what I want is some sort of central server that can wirelessly stream pics, music and Full HD video to all the computers in my house and can also act as backup, is this possible? and how much money are we talking?

I would want to stream to a desktop, 2 laptops, Ipad and if possible my TV.

Phew. _Wirelessly_? If you want to have multiple streams going at the same time, you might hit a bandwidth limit somewhere, if your house isn't completely made of straw.

In addition to the NAS box (basically any will do, you can pay extra if you want RAID functionality -- it's a different story if you want to stream to your TV or Game Console though, here DLNA/UPNP streaming will come up with some format problems for you), you should look for a tri-band access point (b/g/n), if possible MIMO (though most N-WiFi devices are) to get good reception and enough bandwidth everywhere.

Thanks for the help guys, can't see me needing more than 1 stream, and I couldn't run cables all over the house without ripping up the floors.

Would the NAS box need connecting to a PC for the wireless or could I just stick a dongle in the front?

Overall it sound not to bad actually, I already have an N router and £70 quid over the price of the disks sounds pretty good for the box, i'll have to dig out the manual for the TV to see if it supports streaming as we just use it for iplayer at the mo.

The NAS box usually has just a wired network outlet. In my setup that goes directly into the wireless router. If you can tolerate the noise of hard drives spinning in the room the router is located, just put the NAS box there as well.

If you can't, it _may_ be possible that the NAS box supports (some) USB WiFi sticks (after all, it probably runs some variant of Linux), you'll have to check explicitly for that. If it doesn't you'll probably need an access point for it.
