Just looked it up, I guess the 2500 isn't overclockable? hmm.
It is if you want to mess around with voltages and shit from the get go, but the K versions have unlocked multiplier, which makes overclocking much much easier. Definately recommended for free performance with practically no risk.

Samsung F3 hd are good, fast and cheap.
Does this new rig mean that we will actually see Brahms' spade in action on the Tf2 server?

It's probable, though my lack of an appearance lately has been more down to sideprojects and a wireless internet connection than anything else.
I think I shall wait around for this bulldozer thing. It probably won't make any difference but you never know. I'm in no hurry. Thanks for the recommendations everyone.
On the topic of overclocking though: Am I right in thinking that any overclock will result in a hotter processor and thus noiser fan?

Overclocking does generate more heat, however, if you get the right cooler it neednt be noisy.
Don't skimp on the cooler, its very important for overclocking.

If ur planning to overclock, don't rely on the stock coolers, buy an oem (not the retail versions) processor and purchase ur own cooler.

Yeah, I wasn't planning on overclocking to be honest.

2500k's can hit 4.2 on stock coolers by changing one setting in the BIOS, its definatly worth considering with SB to be honest.

Also about trail vs. boxed versions: at least here in DE it appears to me that the difference between those isn't just the fan or no fan, but also the warranty conditions. I haven't looked into for quite a while (my newest PC is from about 2006), but I think it was the case back then.

What's the difference in FPS though? It seems a sort of false economy if you have to buy a premium motherboard and extra cooler and then deal with extra heat in your case.

You get a free performance upgrade in return for your CPU running a few degrees hotter.

Well seeing as so many people are recommending it I may as well look into it. Anyone rate any of the coolers on ebuyer? Scythe Ninja 3 looks alright, but costs £40

I didn't do much benchmarking, but in my case, overclocking my CPU (q6600) from 2.4 to 3.0 GHz made me go from about 80-100 fps to fairly stable 140 fps in TF2. Now I don't have a particularly OC friendly CPU so I guess you could get much better results. You don't have to overclock right away, I only overclocked mine last year, when I thought I needed more fps, so it's more about future proof system, really.

Again, you can do it later and stick with the original cooler for the time being until you decide that you want to tap into that hidden potential. Also the new Sandy Bridge CPUs are well overclockable with the standard fans from what I've read.

You can get decent fans for less than £40
