I always buy Crucial now and it's half of what I have in my system. Have some Corsair stuff though at the moment and that's been fine. I've had problems with OCZ ram so I tend to avoid it nowadays.

They do.. it's hard for me to work out which is better at the moment. ATI apparently has an open source driver that works OK (and is officially supported)... better than the NVidia open source driver (which isn't officially supported), but the NVidia closed source driver is very good, and what I'm using now, the ATI closed source driver sucks pretty bad. (APPARENTLY)

At this point I'm basically sticking to what I know. I wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong, but I can't find any data out there of someone saying "I have a 6870 and it's working great in ubuntu 11.04" A lot of the information is a year or two out of date, which isn't very useful.

Though maybe I should be buying ATI to support their open sourcing of their drivers... I'll look into it.

AMD's bulldozer chips are out next month if you want to wait. Should be better performance than Sandybridge, and cheaper.

My experiences differ, but I guess it's down to preference. I've got OCZ Blade memory in my PC and OCZ Reaper in HeX's machine and it's faultless and highly overclockable. The only memory I've ever had fail was a matched set of Crucial Ballistix DDR800 Ram. Best to just go with what memory suits your needs and be sure they have a decent RMA process, like crucial DOES!

I hope so, but not holding my breath. The industry does need a competitive AMD product and I do like the look of the new AMD chips / architecture.

That said, the quality of previous AMD chips has been poorer at first launch (i.e. lots of the early X2 chips had flaws and the original Phenom ran hot and had a bug that resulted in specific features being disabled and crippled performance).

Lets hope AMD get it right this time!

Hmm, I'm no expert but from previous AMD releases, they normally seem to sew up the low to mid price range in terms of bang per buck. But I feel like the £150 side of the equation is normally Intel's. Do you know what sort of chips they'll be coming out with?

I know your not overclocking yet but surely an extra £10 for the 2500K, if not just for a more future proof system, also graphics card wise you can unlock the 6950 2GB easily to a 6970 with very little risk.

What's the difference between the 2500 and 2500K? I couldn't fathom it.. one has on die graphics?

Just looked it up, I guess the 2500 isn't overclockable? hmm.

Looks good Brahms - I agree with CV and think you should get a 1Tb drive - and get a Caviar Black as well, it's higher performing than the Blues.

I've also heard great things about the Samsung F3s? Or F1s - one of the two.

And for £60 these days you can get 2Tb drives as well.

1Tb F3 for £41 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-082-SA
1Tb Caviar black for £75 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-336-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=
