Did anyone ever tell you the story about how multiplayer games never work right until about a month has passed since their release?

Best response from Ubi I can find is here. Basically "A patch is on the way next week probably".

Asside from rampant fanboism (which isn't a bad thing, I don't want to start a flamewar here) there really is no reason to buy anything day 1, if after 6 months it'll be 3/4 the price and working as intended.

edit - That whole post makes me sound like a dick, I'll try again.

Unless you are a massive fan of a particular series/developer and don't mind paying a premium and having to deal with bugs and patching for a few months after release, you have nothing to gain from buying day 1 other then being able to play the game on day 1. For someone with a passing interest in a particular game or series you're almost always better off waiting 3-6 months and buying the game cheaper and in a working state, which is where I think all these "PRE ORDER ZOMG SUPERPWNAGE XCLUSIVE" things have come from.

It would be really boring however if developers didn't hype up their games so more people buy it on day 1. Sometimes I actually enjoy following news about a game in development up until release, and then buy it on day 1.

Games are fun, I don't really want to constantly be thinking about how it's going to be buggy on release. Gogo flamewar.

Edit - Ok, well now that Hzza has edited his post I sound like a dick. Usually if I'm a fan of a game I get properly excited about it.

Yeah, and thats cool and I do the same (Brink, Bulletstorm) so that initial exitement will overcome the gripes with any/all the bugs that may or may not be present. But, for a game like Crysis 2, where I don't particularly have any interest in asside from the fact it is tipped to be a good game in a genre/style I have been known to like, it makes more sence for me to go out and get it when its £10 waaaaay after the fact then pay a premium and get anoyed with all the bugs and extra money I spent on it. I call it BlOps Synrdome.

There's one major factor in this that I think is quite important: who else has the game.

It's like if there's an awesome TV show on - you can talk about it with other people. If you refuse to watch it until the whole series has been aired then you don't get the same experience of it.

Especially with multiplayer games - it's no fun playing multiplayer on your own when everyone else has completed/finished/no-longer-has-interest in the game.

In particular with multiplayer - I think bugs are to be expected, usually it's one of the things that's hardest for them to test because of so many different configurations / network settings etc. They also won't be able to test with the same kind of numbers as there will be when the game is released - I think this is partly why they do multiplayer betas - so they can do testing that would be unrealistic to do with similar player numbers / capacities with a closed / in-house test.

I hate to think what it must've been like for beta players, since they didn't learn much from it. Hell, AC:B uses port 1000, which is actually blocked by some ISPs. People have had a massive variety of issues (for the record, I've had no issues connecting to games, but can't join or group with Tommy or Mama). Particularly when launching a game 4 months later than on console without the same hype blitz, Ubi needed to make sure that people wanting to play had as few issues as possible.

The last game I got excited about was GTA3. Since then I've refused to entertain any hopes whatsoever. Deadly is right though, if it's multi you're after, the experience can significantly change once the community has matured, sometimes for good, other times for ill,

i can't think of a mature community that isn't full of rampant assholes except for tf2. Even the battlefield games which I bum get far worse overtime until you see one team with a squad of level 50s steamrolling the other side and everyone rage quits. Not that tf2 doesnt have that too but being level 50 in bf means serious experience and in game advantage. Especially in say 2142 when you got your last unlock at level 50.
