The situation at howling hill was actually pretty kosher until the extra undead fay from above started coming down. Now I gotta retreat. At least that town only suppply nymphs, who seem pretty useless, and I'll have retaken a town that has orcs, which are actually good.

There is the dice roll to consider. If they roll a number 2 higher than yours (in the case above) then yes, they can kill you.
Thats as far as I understand it anyway.

A basic army of 24 has a max of 24+6, so 1 troop can hold the line quite happily. If the zombies' commander has some experience, you're in range (although you're still at an advantage until they hit 3 dice).
