a.k.a slow form game habit, phase 2.

Blight of the Immortals might be familiar to anyone who's played Neptune's Pride, since it's by the same guys and is likewise a slow form strategy game. The difference between the ultra intense NP and Blight is cooperation- instead of fighting each other in a battle to see who can wake up at insane hours to fire off an attack, you're cooperating against an AI menace, which in this case is a horde of zombies corrupting towns in fantasy land. It's also a bit more in depth, with different unit types and slightly more complex combat mechanics. Rock Paper Shotgun covered it a while ago in closed beta (it's now in open beta, and a bit more balanced and complicated in equal measure), and since I happened to end up nearby Kieron Gillen in honour a while ago it looks like they're doing another AAR in this.

Anyway, to the point: I've been playing it and enjoying it enough that I'll probably donate for a key, which means I can set up private games, which means anyone who fancies it can join me in a WDG game. I've already got enough yeses for the minimum 4 players, but with a few more we can get a full 8 player map going.

If you play defensively you could probably log in once a day for 10 minutes and be fine. There's no fog of war, so you know exactly what the AI could throw at you, and how long it would take. It's just a matter of the AI moving randomly. I usually check once in the morning, once when I get back from uni, and do anything more complex in the evening, and I haven't been surprised yet.

There's also an alternative option where the game operates in 12 hour 'turns'; everyone gives orders, ticks ready, and the game plays out the equivalent of 12 real time hours. I think it's the default for the PvP variant of the game, since the developer has repeated said that he doesn't want insomnia to be a requirement to be the best possible player.

That philosophy extends to the real time version too, although if you feel the need to log on at 4am to pull off a constant rolling defense of your provinces then you can.

Right, I've put together the game. You need to create an account on the website (it uses your google account details, so you'll need one of them). Once you're up and running with an account, you'll want to click on this link here to see and join the game (the key word is "wdggame" minus the quotes). It's currently paused while we get people in, so hurry up!

You order your armies between towns by selecting them, then clicking Move and picking a town. Combat is the strength (the number of your army) + fortification (in a town you own, the +10-40 on the bottom) + the score on however many dice you have. You get more dice by killing enemies in an XP sort of way. Every unit has some sort of special ability or two which you can find the details of by selecting them and clicking on the skill name (this works for zombs too).

This is a new beta so the zombie mechanics have changed, but as far as I can tell it works on an infestation type system- the longer the zombs are in a town, the more of its inhabitants will die, and the faster zombs will be created. When all inhabitants are dead, no more undead can be created, but the town is also pretty much wiped out so won't be much use to players.

Barb, I can skip time forward (I think) but only if all players are happy with their orders.
