Breaking bad? (pretty big recent one that you didn't mention)
Falling Skies is a reasonable sci-fi series. My mum loved it.
I also really liked Justified - it's about rednecks. I don't think many people have heard of it but I thought it was great!
Also Lost, since you didn't mention that either but I think everyone has seen that now

For comedy, I would say to give IT Crowd and eastbound & down a try (both ended last year). You probably heard about Curb your Enthusiasm but if you haven't, go watch it, you can thank me later.
For crime/drama, HBO new show, True Detective, looks promising and you should check out Broadchurch and Forbrydelsen too if you're into those crime dramas that follow the rule "1 case=1 season" rather than the typical serial tv crime series (CSI/NCIS/etc). If you like the Prohibition-era setting, Boardwalk Empire is pretty good.
If you like archer, do check out Bobs Burgers like Deadly suggested. it is the same level of awesome but delivered more on a Simpsons-early-years way.

And I'm forgetting a lot of others but those should keep you entertained for awhile if you're unfamiliar with them. Also, whenever I'm looking for new stuff to watch, it helps to check out a list of older HBO stuff, they rarely miss the mark (looking at a list right now, names like Extras, Deadwood, Larry Sanders Show and Flight of the Conchords pop up, all good stuff).

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (the new comedy detective show with Andy Samberg of Lonely Island/SNL fame) is actually pretty good, would recommend it. It won two Golden Globes the other day if that helps.

I only watched the first episode of B99, seemed okay. Nice to hear that it turned out great.

Also been watching the Tomorrow People as despite the fact that it's trashy as hell. I'm jonesing for a sci-fi show in the absence of Doctor Who and it sure isn't going to be Agents of Shield.

Off the top of my head: Day Break, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies. The others also gave some great suggestions. If I remember more shows, I'll list them here.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is basically Parks and Recs but in a police department. Still, it is very funny and has a more diverse cast. And if you're not watching Parks and Recs, give it a try.
For a comedy with a twist, I would suggest Psych. It's a show that runs for several seasons now but keeps being funny and actually getting better every season, because they are taking themselves less and less seriously.
Modern family is also a very good comedy show, but that one is well known by now, isn't it?
Also may I suggest Community? It's pretty divisive, but if it's on your wavelength it is hilarious.
And if you feel like being very very silly and random check out Eagleheart and Childrens Hospital. (These are both short format but can be very funny as well).

For more serious stuff:
Southland is a pretty dark semi-procedural cop drama, with some familiar faces. Excellent stuff.
I hear a lot of good things about Sherlock and it's twin from the alternative universe called Elementary. Though I haven't watched them yet.
Awake is amazing, but got cancelled after the first season.
If you didn't catch it back then, check out Brotherhood. It's kind of like Sopranos, but with Irish Thugs and a bit of politics thrown in.
Homeland is pretty good, but I can only vouch for the first season, heard some mixed opinions on the later ones.
The shield, The wire and Oz are some dark and (apparently) realistic depictions of gang/undercover police work and prison respectively. The first two being almost universally praised for the quality.

Well yeah, and Breaking Bad but that's kinda obvious.

Should be enough to get you going as several of those have already run it's course with 5-6 season to catch up on. Have fun.

Elementary was really good. Just watched the last episode of Season 1 of American version of House of Cards and its epic. Its similar to Boss if anyone has seen that - all about political manoeuvre, back stabbing etc

The Thick of It is pretty hilarious as well as a satirisation of British government (plus it stars the new Doctor Who Doctor).

There is also Spartacus (think the new season is coming out soon) which is very similar to the HBO Rome series.

Reckon he won't be using the same... lexicon on Doctor Who! But one can still dream... and yeap, The Thick of It is one of the best satirical shows out there.

and NTSF:SUV? Anyway, agreed, short and very very silly... really good for a laugh, if you're into it (although a couple of my friends that I recommended it complained about it being too silly... bah). And I didn't know that Community was frowned upon, I always thought it was pretty good.

New South Park season has been very strong sofar. Theyre trying out some new stuff like having all the episodes be connected to each other. The first one has a hilarious Kickstarter spoof.

Also started watching Gotham. It isn't bad even if you aren't a fan of Batman. Seeing the origins of some of the iconic villains and secondary characters is nice.

Noticed that and wondered if it was worth it

Thought I might prefer a post-Batman series with everyone just hanging around waiting for him to solve their crimes but he never turns up.

A sort of Waiting for Godot in the DC Universe.
