Mine died at the weekend, no matter what I did I couldn't get it to start so I'm writting the fucker off before I waste another weekend trying to fix it. I need something for basic web browsing and Skyping with a built in webcam and card reader and has to run Steam; not that fussed if it can play games and would rather something smaller then 17". Ideally I don't really want to spend more then £500 (more like £300 tbh) and a 3+ year waranty is a must .

Not the fastest in the world, probably similar in speed to your dell, but it's not a bad price and comes with 2 years warranty. If you want anything with a better GPU you're going to be looking at closer to £500. Sandy Bridge and Fusion are game changers for integrated mobile gpu power, but not out yet.

Go via Quidco, you can get a voucher for 5% off and free delivery, and then a further 8% cashback (Quidco is no hassle, I use them all the time), which brings it down to around £306 if I did my maths right.

I'd say wait for Intel sandy bridge which will obviously help gaming seeing the GPU won't be anything spectacular.

Chances of a laptop coming with a 3+ year warranty is unlikely - you'd have to look at an extended warranty (probably ~£100 for 2/3 years) or look at getting it insured elsewhere.

Look at the Hewlett Packard DV6/7, they come with a half decent built in graphics chip (5470 I think) which is better than the crappy ATi 4250 or worse still, Intel integrated graphics.  They have just revamped the range so there should be some decent deals out there.

Check out Comet, they have some excellent ex display deals.

Yeah, I meant that if there was an option for a 3+ year warranty, nothing I've found so far has come with 3 as standard .

The bigger retailers do 3 year warranties, of course they're more premium prices compared to online stores...

Why not go for a Netbook? That'd fit your required spec and you can easily get one cheaper then £300 (and probably a much cheaper warranty if you wanted one), obviously possibly a much cheaper option if you only want it for web contacting not games, and it'd be proper portable for bed/on the sofa/whatever, but isn't great for lots of word processing etc. Asus ones are usually quite good, but the Dell's can be cheap and pretty reliable too.

For games though, yeah, some sort of internal graphics card better then integrated is recommended - the ones which use integrated and an onboard one are usually pretty decent for battery life for browsing vs. power for games; check the specs of them to make sure.

Sat down with the Mrs this morning to look at some lappys, she seems to have fallen in love with the Sony Vaio. Anyone had any experience with them? Haven't had a chance to check out any reviews or anything yet so feel a bit uninformed (I'd always written Vaio's off as overpriced and flashy, but it seems that's what the woman likes ).

Vaios are stupidly priced but for the most part well designed inside. Come with more bloatware than you can shake your cock at though

Yeah - Sony VAIO's are quite expensive - but like Chaos said they're usually really well built machines so it's unlikely you'll have any problems with it.
