Anyone else got this?

I bought this in the steam sale, tried to play it a bit last night and was *immediately* incredibly frustrated by the ridiculous number/length of stupid filler screens.

I think I had the game open for the best part of 40 minutes and probably spent about 5 minutes of that actually controlling a car. The rest of it was taken up by the game explaining how the menu worked, that I had unlocked a new car, that I had gone up a level, how to play the game etc. etc.

I think when I launched the game it was about 10 minutes before I could even press a key. What if I had launched the game by mistake? I would have had to have waited 10 minutes before I could quit it!

Not to mention that when I launched it, it immediately started playing an unskippable trailer for some other game!!

I think that every game that has some kind of movie, cutscene, animation or whatever should respond to keypresses and allow the user to skip it.

All in all it made it a terribly frustrating experience and I was looking forward to a nice, less serious racing/driving game.

I'm with you. Sometimes if it uses BIK format you can just replace/delete them, but not always. While I'm on the subject : unwanted replays.

I lol'd.

Similar experience with burnout (which I would recommend) but after it bit it stops explaining everything too you and lets you smash into things.

My guess would be that this game is dumbed down massively for the console generation.

I got it.. once you get passed that crap.. it's quite a nice game.
Regret paying £18 for it though..

Maybe we could do some MP to make it worth it ?

Hate any cutscene in any game tbh, if you can't tell a story or show something in the game world I don't want to know about it. Worst offender by a fucking long long was was Bad Company 2's single player, in the first mission there are about 3 or 4 times where you walk around a corner, get pulled out of the game and into a 10 second cutscene so your character could say something, then get put back into character. It makes it about a billion times worse that it actually fades in and out of the cutscene; they might as well have a big sign pop up saying "YOUR IMERSION WILL BE BROKEN IN 3...2...1..."

BlOps had similar problems, but at least for the most part you stay "behind the eyes" as it were.

Its almost like HL never happened.

Amen. Every single cutscene should be skippable and pauseable.

I recently noticed the same with assassins creed 2. I played it on onlive in order to test latency. You'd think I'd be able to rush through the early parts since I just finished the game a few days before. But NO, in the 30 free minutes I didn't get a weapon and had about half a minute of free running :/

I've been playing it more, and although it's by no means as good as a Codemaster's title (Dirt2, F1 2010, GRID) it does get good.  The police chases can be amazing and quite intense.

The cut scenes are very annoying, as is the lack of the flashback feature from Codies' games.  Also, there's no difficulty settings, instead they have the fucking catch up feature meant for 8 year olds.

All in all, a disappointment.

I agree it has the usual "HERES HOW YOU USE YOUR BRAIN"-bullshit at the start, but once you get passed that its a superb new Burnout. I like it.

Sad to read you had the same experience; because it's really stupid, and I certainly hate unskippable non-playable anything whatever. Terrible!
