So long as WASD is in a comfortable place for you and it's not over £20 then it's fine, imo.

What's the fuss about mechanical keyboards? Worth a look? I like the lycosa with the low profile keys - but dunno if I'm missing out on something awesome?

Ye olde IBM mechanical keyboards are sturdy as hell -- thanks to the full metal bottom plate you could probably club someone to death with it.

Cherry mechanicals have a rather nice feel to them when pushing -- with rubber dome (bog standard Logi and Cherry) you get lots of resistance up front, then that sudden "plop" feeling when you're past the flip point. Mechanicals start out with less initial resistance up unto the flip point, then have just a slight click and ease down into the spring. I prefer them for coding, since the different resistance curve reduces typing strain. But it's reeeeeally subtle. €dit: And they're quite loud, some coworkers may feel annoyed.

If you feel comfortable with low profile, by all means stick to them.

Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600. Just swapped two of our keyboards for these. Very cheap, very nice, very quiet. Low key profile. Microsoft might be bad for software, but their hardware is usually top notch.

in fairness to ms windows 7 and office 2010 are solid. everything windows live sucks but mostly because of the live branding and its not office related so they dont care. And windows phone probably sucks and the lack of android office sucks. But at least if i get a BSOD of death nowadays its because I was overheating my gfx card and not because windows 98 is messed up again and going mental

I think it's entirely down to personal preference, I use both low-profile and mechanical keyboards a lot and personally I prefer the low-profile ones. They just seem... nicer somehow.

What's the fuss about mechanical keyboards?

I'm gettin a Filco Majetouch-2 with cherry Browns next week, will let you know what its like. Hella pricy though, £100+. Geekhack.org has a good mech keyboard wiki that I've been looking at loads recently and www.keyboardco.com is a good place to pick them up from. Like others have said, it's a personal preference thing, if you can try out a mech before you buy, then do just to get a feel for what you're getting into.

I find low profile keys alright. But the lack of travel annoys me sometimes. Feels like I'm jamming my fingers into a solid backplate all the time.

What I'd really like is an ergo mech keyboard.

Get it to glow in red, blue or purple. Works well. The separate W,A,S,D section is very handy. My only criticism would be that the up, down, left, right arrow buttons have been squeezed under the number pad. But to be fair, I'd been using the same Dell keyboard for over 4 years before this one.

I suppose in hind sight I could have gone for a Ideazon Zboard Fang Gamepad.



I could have kept using my Dell keyboard and then had the handy pad for gaming.

I had the exact same thing as Rippy, but I found I never used the gaming section of it. While I could play just fine with the normal keys (the keyboard in itself is great), it took too much space on the table and not having a separate DEL key (it's integrated into the num block, which you have to turn off to use it) made me rage several times. Now I'm using Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600, which costs hardly more than 10 GBP, but is good enough. I only want nice stuff to type with, gaming is not really my concern - the 6-10 buttons I use for it are exact same quality as the rest of them.

I've just ordered the steelseries 6gv2 (linked above). Mechanical keyboard that doesn't have clicky buttons.

I would have liked to have had something a bit flashier (I like backlit keys ) - but the razer keyboard was >£100 and I think the clicky keys would have annoyed me/anyone on mumble.

It'll be arriving tomorrow - so I'll let you all know how I'm finding it.
