My son wants a new keyboard for Christmas.  Plays mainly CoD and a bit of TF2.

My experience is limited to a logitech classic.  Any recommendations?  Preferably 'good value'

Sorry, this won't be much help. I'm using the Z-Merc game keyboard (former by Ideazon, but now integrated into SteelSeries, or the other way around, I can't remember), which has an additional section, which simulates the whole WASD area, but with nice buttons:

BUT, I found myself not using that extra section and actually still using WASD. I like the keyboard in itself, great for typing and the keys feel great, but the extra section is kind of useless to me, so can't say anything about the keyboard as a gaming keyboard. Sorry.

Futher problems are:
- it's much bigger, than the usual keyboard, despite merging the arrow keys block with the number block
- which is in itself horribly convoluted and annoying

All in all, I wouldn't buy this again, but i'm not using it as a gaming keyboard, so your mileage may vary.

Hm, okay, you have several choices to make:

- Key height (Normal or laptop-style flat)
- Key mechanism (Buckling spring, rubber dome, clicky switch)
- Lighting (lit or unlit)
- Accessories (Smartcard, Magnet Stripe reader, LCD Display, you name it)

or you want to go all out on a Gaming Input Device

I, personally, prefer a "normal height rubber dome" for gaming, which is your basic Logitech or Cherry model. For programming OTOH the Pressure point of a clickykey is nice, although loud. Flat keyboards are right out for me.

Oh yeah, and then there's the issue of some cheap keyboards having blind spots for multiple keypresses, but that's probably below your intended price point.

There are also superflat rubber keys of a ZX Spectrum! Don't forget about those!

I've had a Lycosa, but the keys were too low profile (laptop style) and at the moment I'm using the Avro which I love.

Tbh, keyboards won't make much of a difference to his gaming; get something that looks cool and has anti-ghosting and you'll probably do alright.

Gaming keyboards are usually terrible keyboards made to look nice, mechanical keyboards are the sex. They are quite noisy however, but imo well worth it simply because they last forever and feel amazing compared to the crappy rubber dome on pretty much every keyboard nowadays.

I broke my old IBM when trying to thoroughly clean it. I had a sad. Also just get a PS2->USB converter and use USB extensions.

No real logic behind it other than OMG IT LOOKS AWESOME AND LIGHTS UP ORANGE. Was about £20 I think.

Also the macro keys on the side annoy Hzza a lot so practical as well as hilarious.
