My manager is having serious problems with his Acer Dual Core laptop that has has had Umbunto 10 installed after a "slight" knock.

It starts up, checks hard drive for errors, comes up with errors, goes through the fixing precess but when the laptop finally loads he is unable to access any of his documents as they are all locked out.

Is there any way to unlock the data and transfer to a memory stick?

Yeah, get that bad baby HDD out of there and at least make a full disk copy of it (preferably at the lowest level you can do, block level or somesuch) then you can tinker and do whatever like chown and recovery tools on it! Cheesy

if you are root nothing can stop you, if chown is broke get a new copy of it, failing that boot to a live CD so you are root

if rsyslog is configured so, look in /var/log/messages and /var/log/kernel for errors like "/dev/sd*" or file system errors

Try booting Gparted and running the repair bit, Worked for me before.
