Anyone who was around a loooong time ago might have heard me reminiscing fondly of my days in
Urban Dead
, a browser based zombie MMO thing which I played fairly solidly for a couple of years. Anyone who follows RPS might have seen
Die2Nite
a few weeks back, when they did a
preview
of the beta, and as it's another browser based zombie MMO (sort of) thing it grabbed my interest. I remembered to check back today to find that it'd been released just a few hours before, which was good timing.
The concept is 40 random people thrown together in a town (with random cheery names such as my 'Rainy Camp of the Damned'), which gets attacked at midnight every night by zombs. Every day you get 1 ration of water from the town well, which replenishes your AP up to a default of 6, which is used for either building improvements to the town (watchtower to survey the attack, pump to get extra water, etc) or moving around outside, which is how you scavenge for materials to build things. Every night the attack gets a bit larger, and if the town's defense (a sum of all the contributions in the town bank plus improvements) fail, you may get attacked in your own home, which can also be upgraded for defense. If you're killed, your life in the town is over and you can start up in the next town put together. If you're not, you throw out the corpses before they rise again and prepare for the next night. Since there are bonuses for staying alive until the very end (when the last person dies), it quickly turns into a manipulative game of selfishness and community spirit, since people who are shunned are pretty vulnerable to a good lynching. Every town has a discussion forum for pleas for help, slander, etc.
At the moment placement is individual, so unless we're very good at timing together we'll be put in different towns. Once we get some survival points though, we can form coalitions, which guarantees we'll all be placed in the same town, which could lead to much fun indeed. Anyone (besides me and Dibble) interested?

Yeah, it's pretty much a translation/conversion for the UK audience. Not sure why they went for the annoying shortened title though, think I might just start referring to it as Die Tonight.

The town forum is very valuable, generally the community will help people out if they're trapped. Someone got shunned in my town for nicking planks to build a hovel, which has led me to change my description of the genre to 'hobo politics'.

we had a right griefer already he was robbing and posting like an idiot on the forums, and took a lot of the bank. He got shunned immediately and eat some stolen cyanide. Then i think someone ate him.
The game is telling me I have to be a hero to form a coalition. Is there someway to earn hero status through play or do I have to pay? And coalition is a group of 5.

If you're one of the last people in your town as it goes down and it's been over 5+ days, you'll get proportionately more hero days depending on how long past 5 days you made it. It's one of the main motivations to make your survival important, and why things can get ugly when the population count gets low.
Might want to watch your back now J, people might start bitching and if 8 people complain about you taking planks you're shunned. Just schmooze the hell out of the town forums and hope people aren't being too hardcore.
Edit:
Another few tips I've learned today:
- If you haven't drunk or eaten anything today, but you've got water or food then don't bother using them until you've used all your AP. Every point is vital. You can only drink/eat once a day, so your max AP is 18 plus whatever dodgy methods you might use.
- It doesn't take any AP to enter or leave the town. At the bottom of your map outside there's a bit of text telling you how many AP you are from the settlement, so as long as you don't let your AP go below that number (+6 per consumable to be used)
- If you drink alcohol your forum posts get slurred. Naturally we already have a town drunk.

don't forget to make yourself a tent, it contributes 1 defence point to the town and 2 to you and is fairly cheap. Also make sure you use the watchtower if its been built. Using the watchtower is free but it takes nearly everyone doing it for good accuracy until you upgrade it with a scanner

EDIT: Ah, nevermind. Registration is apparently not possible in my country. Yay for global networking.
EDIT2: This game has been running for a bit in german already known as "die Verdammten", currently starting the 2nd season. But yeah, what's the fun in that if I can't hang out with you...
