Character development is fine, I actually really enjoyed most of the series - but the last few eps go totally off the rails descending into 30 minute long monologues on the soul and existentialism and what it means to be human - it's a bit dissapointing as instead of a huge final battle, you get the main character slowly dissolving into the thoughts inside his head.

Problem is with Eva is, it started out right but became so tangled in its own web there was no clear pattern to what was happening. The story was never fully resolved or concluded and the writer himself once admitted he had not planned an ending.

This frustratates me a little, I'm all for high brow anime and intellectual musings and ponderings upon the nature of reality and the human mind (well, not really, i'd still rather watch robots kick the shit out of each other), but you shoudn't do it JUST BECAUSE you feel you have to - there should be a point to it and a conclusion or opinion should be presented, or at least an ambigious uncertainty which makes sense and allows the viewer to ponder its varied meanings, rather than thinking "What the fuck, that makes me want to eat my own head."

This is all going on the original series btw, I later found out the creator and writer of the series was going through a total mental breakdown as he wrote the last few episodes, which goes a long to explaining why they are how they are. He recovered, and later went back and rewrote them to try and appease the fans and properly tie up the series (End of Evangelion) but I've never got round to watching them.

Mmm End of Evangelion will be even more frustrating for you then, it's in a similar vein.

The story is tangled, true, but at least things are happening. It is far more frustrating, to me, when a series has every/most episode going back to the way it started, or not even showing any indication previous events have happened. (Ep 11 of Bebop is a perfect example). Evangelion takes you on a journey rather than a ride.

I understand your POV much better now and I do agree with you that the final episodes are... odd but I still really liked them, they do fit in. I suppose it all depends on your taste and perception.

Just remembered a couple that I think are def worth watching. First one which I dunno if has already been posted is obvious choice for me: Full Metal Alchemist.
Pretty much what got me watching anime.
Second one is Lelouch of the Rebellion, plenty of awesome robot fights, cool story (though it can get a little confusing at times) and a pretty awesome anti-hero

I really enjoyed "Welcome to the NHK" It's very, very dark/depressing (might vary for people, I was identifying with the main char a lot when I watched it) but hilarious at times. Humour is the main thing I look for in an Anime.

GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) Is also really funny. Biker gang leader becomes Teacher, hijinks ensue.

The 'Runrouni Kenshin' ('Samurai X' in the west... Ugh) series, and especially the OVA's were a good watch too.

'Black Lagoon' is brilliant if you want an action oriented anime with great production values, And One Piece is the quintessential Shounen anime/manga - It just keeps getting better whilst Naruto and Bleach are well past their sell by date.



I've watched tons of different animes (over 100 stored on my file server, and many more back when i was young and couldn't afford to archive everything), most are pretty forgettable

I'm watching Black Lagoon atm. Like it so far, only on episode 6 or something, though. The main character seems a bit schizophrenic, but it's a bit too early to tell whether or not that's on purpose or just bad writing.

Watched Black Lagoon a couple years back. Twas ok, some pretty cool scenes but overall nothing exceptional.
I loved Bleach when it first started out, but it just steadily goes down hill unfortunately.

Also, slightly girly though it is, "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya" was pretty funny.

And finally, I love how this thread was started to discuss movies, yet now it's been over run with chat about anime

Not really, anime just describes the art style etc, but can be either in movie or TV show form

I have not seen much Anime and I don't like most of them. They often lack something that would make them great.

However, I do not regret watching Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. It's totally epic. In fact, I've been searching for a new anime with similar appeal (music, animation and stuff) since the series ended.

this is kind of girly and japanese through and through but still an interesting watch. especially if you watch it in broadcast order and then actual order after.

If you like Death Note, try Kaiji. It's all Machiavellian plots and logic games, mixed in with more suspense than is healthy.


I love it, marathoned the whole lot. 'Liar game' is great too if you read Manga (chance to derail thread again!)
