It actually takes place between R1 and R2 with new characters in europe. Some characters will return in the next episode (Suzaku and C.C)

'Black Lagoon' is brilliant if you want an action oriented anime with great production values, And One Piece is the quintessential Shounen anime/manga - It just keeps getting better whilst Naruto and Bleach are well past their sell by date.

Watched Black Lagoon a couple years back. Twas ok, some pretty cool scenes but overall nothing exceptional.

Wellllll..... 3 years later and after reading some random article on the web for reasons I'm really not sure of I decided to download and watch Black Lagoon. I think it was some post on a site about Anime to watch and I really havn't ever watched any Anime ever (except if you include the hour long Daft Punk discovery album anime thing).

Watched the first couple of episodes tonight and enjoying it so far!

Any more recommendations for the uneducated/uninitiated?

I watched baccano because of this thread. It was good violence porn. cowboy bebop, ghost in the shell SACs, trigun, hellsing ultimate, full metal alchemist, and every film from ghibli obv. Summer wars, girl who leapt through time, sword of the stranger.

And yeah don't ever both with subs unless you want to learn japanese or the dub is so bad it ruins the tone. All I just listed have superb dubs, baccano actually has more awards for the english version than the japanese.

Death Note is a classic. Also, Attack on Titan seems to be the show to watch this season.

Full metal alchemist is def one of my favs but make sure you download Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as this is the better version. Also Attack on Titan is really good but not finished yet - can watch here (http://www.crunchyroll.co.uk/attack-on-titan).

I much prefer subs (as long as they are good quality) but just personal preference. Does mean you can't look away but I like to hear the chosen voice actors.

subs are a poorer experience unless the dub is shockingly bad or you have a good grasp of japanese, japanese accents, and japanese inflections. Your visual experience will always be poorer from having to expend brainpower and visual processing on so much reading. It also takes quite awhile to know enough japanese voices to begin to understand voice performances. There are more and more series lately with better voice casts on the english version. Bacanno has more awards for the english version (the japanese version just has standard japanese accents, the english has good italian-american, american, european, a whole bunch, I would not watch bacanno in japanese even if I understood it) and FMA gets a lot of critic praise for its dub.

I would love to learn japanese properly (I have a grasp of basic grammar and vocab) and would absolutely watch all my favourite animes subbed to help my learning, but the laughably bad dubs of the past are gone for any series worth watching, and in a number of cases the dub has superior acting.

Subs are personal preference sure, but its crap advice to suggest someone should start out with subs, it puts a lot of people off for no good reason and comes off snobish. If you really like whatever it is then I'd suggest watching the dub and the sub. But always the dub first for people new to anime.

You do talk crap. I never said he should watch with subs - I said I prefer them. Just because some thought tumbles out of your head doesn't make it right. And pot kettle black on snob remark.

TBH could not disagree more with most of what you wrote. It is down to preference. Try both. Really don't think it matters which you start with. Crunchyroll is free and legal so easy access which is why I linked it. Plus I very much doubt Attack on Titan is dubbed yet.

IMO the dubbing kinda ruins alot of anime. Watched Princess Mononoke the other night on film4, it was dubbed and it put me off a bit. Would rather hear the original voice acting( as I think the quality is better) with subtitles.

The english dub for Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is really nice for one simple reason:

I would recommend Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Baccano! and Death Note. The first 10 or so episodes of Death Note in particular have some of the most tense moments in all of fiction, imo.

As for the sub/dub thing, as Jebus said, it's down to preference. I prefer dubs as I'm a very slow reader and watching most subbed series's requires me to pause the video literally every few seconds or I'll miss stuff. I would suggest trying both at some point. I could be wrong but i think that the 3rd season of Black Lagoon hasn't been dubbed yet, so you could watch the first 2 seasons dubbed and the 3rd subbed to see which you prefer.
