What Does Valve Bring?

Valve's approach to Dota 2 is unusual in that the gameplay itself is remaining almost entirely untouched. "Our first reaction is to assume that [design elements are] there for a reason," project lead Erik Johnson explains. "IceFrog is one of the smartest designers we've ever met. He's made so many good decisions over the years in building the product. He virtually never makes a decision that doesn't have some reasoning behind it and a way to pick apart the logic behind it." This approach means that Dota 2 basically is DotA-Allstars with new technology.

DotA-Allstars' roster of 100+ heroes is being brought over in its entirety. The single map games take place on is functionally identical to the one that you can download for free today in the Warcraft III mod. Items, skills, and upgrade paths are unchanged. Some hero skills work slightly better due to being freed from the now-ancient Warcraft III engine, but Dota 2 will be instantly familiar to any DotA player.

I'm not sure prettying it up, throwing in some community stuff and mentoring will be enough to get me playing

That's more purchasable. I figure they realised that if they messed with the core formula it would turn off the existing market of DotA players.

This is very unlikely. IceFrog, the current designer for DotA, is leading the team and according to that gameinformer article it looks like it will be a carbon copy but made tasty via graphics.

My issue will be how will I stop the noobz from ruining my stats and how will I farm my APM!!!

Also item names are gonna be so difficult to remember.

Hats are a nice bonus, but they can't carry a game. Thought it would be nice to have them in a game where you see yourself.

If I counted correctly, it currently has 101 heroes, each with 4 unique abilites and 119 items.

tbh it sounds like valve couldn't really be bothered and let icefrog get on with it, and i'm not interested in it at the moment so a graphical upgrade doesn't help. Better not come with tf2 hats or cost money tbh, if its just allstars why are hardcore fans going to pay?

I said it teaches you bad DotA habits. It's like playing Fallout 3 and wondering why your sick V.A.T.S. aim doesn't help you in Quake Live.

What habits does it teach you?

Well it teaches you not to care about denies (getting the last hit on your own units so the enemy can't get gold and get less exp), a real fundamental in DotA. Creep pulling is non existent, (pulling creeps to fight the neutral creeps so that the enemy doesn't get the exp from your creeps and you get extra exp from the neutral creeps).

Creep stacking doesn't exist either and creeps are very easy to last hit with nearly every hero.

As well as that, you can tell when an enemy hero is sending a command to attack you, which is huge. Completely takes away the guessing games in the laning phase: Is that hero just coming forward for a creep, or does he want to start messing me up?

There are more things besides the creeps; mainly to do with things like the weird stuff LoL has like glyphs and summoner spells, not losing gold when dying, brush.

In general a lot of the things which made DotA difficult to learn have been removed in LoL. This is good or bad depending on your perspective, but for DotA... it's detrimental.

LoL is still a good game though, just has fundamental differences.
