Ok guys - you know the massive lag that happened last night on the TF2, mumble and L4D2 servers?
Well that was caused by the minecraft server.

Well now I am stuck with a problem...I understand that many of you have sunk many many hours into building up the world (even though I have warned you that it might suddenly not be available anymore) but it's just becoming a pain in the ass for the following reasons:

1) It is a massive resource hog - sometimes using up to 400/500mb of memory - that's more than the TF2 servers combined.
2) When the server starts up it's ok - but within a few hours it usually starts hitting 25% CPU usage on the server (i.e. uses one core at 100%) this can sometimes get worse an cause the entire server to lag out (as has happened on numerous occasions) - when it does this, it lags it out so much that it's difficult to access the server to shut it down.
3) It's only been up a week or two - and we've already had incidents of people blowing up other people's creations and getting pissed off about it


Basically - it's now too much of a problem. Something needs to change to stop it from lagging out the entire server.

Disco has suggested that it might be caused by the minecarts, or from falling through the bottom of the map.

So I propose to you the following 2 solutions:
1) The minecraft server stays down until the halloween update - where hopefully the bugs causing it to use all the resources is fixed.
2) We start a new world - and nobody is to build any minecarts or fall through the map.

I *am* open to other suggestions, but considering how much grief this thing has already caused - it had better be a simple solution.

Theres little point starting a new world now because we will need a new one at halloween anyway. My preferred solution would be a map edit to delete all fire/minecart tracks/minecarts and then install the griefalert plugin and using it to deny their placement as blocks. I still need to find a tool that can mass edit the map for that though.

If you decide to keep it running, setting the priority to low and limiting it to one cpu core (if the server is multi-core) might help in case it goes crazy again.

There's probably tools out there to watch it's memory usage etc. but I guess you don't want to bother fiddling around with something like that.

Edit: Reading my own post, you could interpret it as me calling deadly lazy. Not meant that way!

I say remove mine carts fire, if it doesn't help, shut it down till update. Or maybe just have it running sometimes? (Not when people are on TF2)

I'm not worried about losing the IPP as I would support a full restart with the update anyway.

Fuck off cruel Cheesy Just kidding - I know what you mean...im not sure what tools would be available for that. I'm still pretty new to the windows server stuff. Setting the priority to low / set it's affinity might not be a bad idea though.

Also...the whole 'just have it running sometimes' - I have no idea how to do this with windows - if anyone can suggest a method - by all means.

I voted New World in the poll, because I see the point of you not wanting to invest more time than positively necessary, you probably have better things to do than to babysit us minecrafters. I'd like to trial without invulnerability until the halloween update, and talk about another possible reboot by then.

If you have the time to spare and want to do us a favor, then I'd pick up on the suggestion already brought forward: mass edit out the "bad" blocks, limit resources, and/or start and stop it according to TF2 peak hours.

My suggestion: Have it run as a service (there's freeware/open source tools for that, such as cygrunsrv or srvany), and then "net start minecraft" and "net stop minecraft" from the scheduler.

As I don't want you to have to spend time playing about with the Minecraft server when the TF2 servers so frequently need attention, I reckon leave it for the moment, start up a temporary world for the next couple of weeks if there's demand. Hold on to the save file for the old world to either boot up for Halloween if that fixes things, or to just boot up for an hour or two at some point so people can jump on a take screenshots of their creations.
