This has already come up before, and I agree with Deadly - unless you want to sacrifice the maps you like playing, don't go asking for other maps to be removed (hey, Hoodoo is still in rotation, and you don't see me actively campaigning for it to be removed)

Look, it was just a suggestion, and I openly admit in the opening post that we go back and fourth about it.
The last public discussion was quite a while ago, around the time doublecross was released if I remember correctly and discussions in the admin only forum I can't know about.

If you don't want to discuss it, ok, I'll back off. It's your server, your decision.

However let me just say the it-got-voted/rtv-it argument isn't right, because otherwise 2fort would still be on the vote-list.
Agree with Cow. This is a tricky subject and we're never going to please everyone.

We should try and get some stats about maps that empty the server or are least played. These at least should be candidates for removal (from the map vote) at least. We can then also include a policy of admin led votes for the times when these maps may want to be played by the wider community.

Whilst I don't blame deadly OR the admins, I also agree that it is impossible. If you reduce the number of maps in the vote, then you get more direct results on what map is coming next. You can't however, prevent 4 crap maps from appearing in the vote.

Just my 2p.

PS. Maybe we could consider a trial change to "RTV" - allowing a smaller percentage to cause a map change. This is risky though, and could see the server flick from map to map.

Best approach? Possibly the one taken by Claws - sit out on the maps you hate then come back when you're ready. The internet is full of pron for those short 15 minute breaks Wink

I say leave the maps as they are. You could end up doing this tweaking forever, still have people complain and have no idea if what you'd done was actually worth while.

This tbh.

The reason I haven't commented in the Admin section is because I feel that whatever you do with regards to maps, some people will like it, some won't. Story taim nao; a while ago I was on the server, a few people were moaning about the map, so I changed it. Then person B would moan that I'd changed it/moan about the new map, so I'd queue up the next map to please them. Then people moaned about that. In the end, nobody was happy, and I spent more time in the admin menus then playing the game and ended up all stressed and not in a great mood. So now when I'm on the server, I a) asside from rtv-ing and voting, do NOTHING with regards to maps and b) take the claws aproach to maps I don't like (bugger off and watch pron for 15-20 minutes until the next map starts).

So yeah, my view is to put it blunt, haters gon' hate!

I guess my thoughts are summed up as follows:
1. I am reluctant to blanket remove maps from the rotation as it becomes a difficult decision on which maps to remove and I feel that while a fair number of people complain about maps like egypt - there are also a fair amount that don't mind playing it.
2. On a personal level I'm getting fed up of the lack of constructive criticism. It's very easy to pick a fault with something - but much harder to come up with solutions or alternatives to fix it. That isn't directed at any person in particular, but I just want people to bring more ideas to the table.
3. I am more than happy to work with you guys to address the map votes - but I want people to bring me fresh ideas rather than just picking fault with it. I don't have hours and hours and hours to spend looking into the voting system or alternatives.

Just posted that in the private thread on this very topic. I'm sorry if I'm being dismissive - Im ok with discussing maps and votes - but try to bring something to the table. The same thing happened with the scramble plugin thread (which I am about to resurrect) - a lot of people were saying that it wasn't working - but didn't offer practical solutions.

As Hzza says - having worn an admin hat in the past, you can't win sometimes!

The problem comes down to everyone having a different set of maps they like. The public tend to like GR and DB more than clan members do. Maps like Egypt are occasionally loved and occasionally despised but realistically, if you lose maps like Egypt you end up playing Badwater for the third time in a row.

So to have fun times in good maps, everyone kind of has to accept playing on maps they don't like. Allowing too powerful voting is probably a mistake, because the odd round of egypt doesn't do anyone that much harm and spaces out the 'good' maps a bit more.

For what it's worth, my feeling is a) remove total stinkers - the 'junctions' b) keep the map list as wide as possible, but bias towards the ones people like c) have short time/round limits for the maps people moan about d) keep rtv relatively limited.

My perception is it's about fine as it is.

yes please don't change maps with admin menu, often it would be a map I had been waiting for only to go back to gravelpit. Like hzza said leave maps down to rtv. Its ashame theres not a better rtv plugin though that can prevent 4 crap maps coming up in the vote somehow. I do know enough about plugin coding to write a custom one if theres nothing out there. I wrote an adminmod for l4d which let you do a few things like mode and map changes.

I want a plugin that tells you "Press CTRL+V to vote", so people can actually take time and look at the list instead of voting by accident while switching weapons or something.

Notably:
Quote
Planned Features:
Runoff voting - until a map has a majority vote (> 50%) it will keep running votes of all the winners.
Vote warning - warns players before a vote begins.

Added vote slot blocking feature. When enabled, the first three vote slots are disabled to prevent accidental votes.
New cvar to control this feature.

What do you think - worth a poke perhaps? The main ballache will be to get all of the maps etc. set up into their appropriate groups.
