We hear sound by sound waves hitting a membrane (mechanically). It usually takes a couple of milliseconds for the brain to decode the sound and understand. But the retinas in your eyes react to light in a much longer, chemical process and so images cannot be passed to the brain as quickly. This process takes at least 50 milliseconds. So there is actually a delay between audible information to our brain and images received by the brain. To counter-act this, the brain alters our perception of reality by creating an illusion that the two pieces of information have reached the brain at the same time. Infact, the only time your brain can get a break from these reality altering ways is if something is 10 meters away as the speeds will match up and get to your brain at the same time.
