There was PVP since the beginning, you have to use the terminals near the spawn to sign up for matchmaking. I haven't tried it yet, but I heard it's pretty solid.

So I got to play this a bit more today.
The mechanics seem to be working out pretty well. It does devolve into a bit of a grindfest with the thumpers though. While the first few fights are pretty awesome, it gets old rather fast. Random encounters seem to get a bit on the predictable side as well. Haven't had a look at PvP yet.
I would appreciate seeing a bit more story. The Lore, all things considered, doesn't seem too bad of an outstart, only they aren't doing much with it right now apparently.
The scenery (AA-Cannons and deployable base defenses) seems to suggest the possibility of bigger PvE events, only I haven't seen any signs of those yet.

There is a video around that shows a full scale attack on a town. To be fair, the beta right now is mostly PvP and crafting balancing and shit. Not much to see PvE wise yet.

Cruel keeps pimping PS2 now and i don't see anything interesting in firefall. Should I care about it still? Seems like too much mmo grind with bad art design. Also trying to be PS2 but failing.

I am sceptical they will produce anything more than your usual sub-standard mmo and really we should all play planetside 2. Obv I don't have beta access to either though, so this is a very shallow opinion, wondering if anyone with firefall beta can point out any good points and if I should care about it more than ps2.

Not even close to try to be PS2 mate, this is focused on PvE with only one faction, also vehicles are only a maybe. This is more like Borderlands, minus the guns, plus a lot of people.

Edit: And yeah, of course gonna play PS2 when it comes out. So far I'm playing Tribes:Ascend. All alone...

Due to shitloads of stuff to do at work right now I'm cutting back a bit on my gaming. So I'm not sure I want to pony up a subscription fee for PS2.
So far, Firefall (free2play, remember) scratches my "casual MMOFPS" itch perfectly fine.

Have you done the event at the beach? From time to time (only at night I think) a huge glowy orb thingy spawns at the beach, near the catwalks (?) and lots of enemies spawn there, the shooting ones, not the bugs. If the AI works, it is a really tough fight, don't attempt it alone!

Also make sure you're grouping up with somebody who has a bigger thumper (e.g. me ) it is much more effective.

Like the others said, it really isn't trying to be PS2. There is only one faction, not a three-side war. The PvP is instanced, you queue up and then get randomly sorted into basically a red/blu cp match. As a reward you get some resources, not some persistent piece of land or something.

For me, the PvP feels like a lesser version of TF2 with jetpacks and the PvE is a repetitive grind. However, I won't give up on it yet. I've never seen a game beta that was such an early beta, they are still changing a lot of stuff, for example recently they completely removed leveling! So maybe they'll still get to somewhere.

I still have a beta key for Firefall if you want to. PS2 beta hasn't started yet and probably will still be months away, but trust me, once it happens you'll hear about it

Hm, yeah, yesterday my last thoughts in the game were "do I really want to grind these 7500 Crystite for the bigger Thumper?".
Then I thought "Oh my, this _really is_ a grindfest!"
Okay, I'm only Assault 5/Engie 3/Medic 2... But I'm also not sold on these classes yet.
Multiclassing should be more like D&D, where certain perks are locked to your total level, not each individual class level.

I really like the crafting system though.
